Bloody Vomit/Diarrhea

Before you tell me to call the vet, let me tell you that I have already taken him to the vet twice in the last two days.
Tuesday night, my 12 yr old 92 lb yellow lab got a hold of my son's 5 inch long bone from a t-bone steak.  I immediately took him to a 24 hr emergency vet.  (Not my regular vet).  They took one lateral xray, didn't see anything, but couldn't take more films because he was uncooperative and they couldn't sedate him because he had eaten.  They suggested that I watch him, and bring him back in the morning so they could sedate him for the films, if he wasn't doing better.  The next morning, and all of yesterday, he was fine so I din't bother calling my regular vet or taking him back to the emergency vet.  He has been and continues to eat and pee/poop without a problem.  HOWEVER, earlier today he puked up blood.  So, I immediately took him to my regular vet and got her up to speed on what has been going on over the last couple of days.  She requested the records from the other vet, examined him, and sent me home with sucralfate.  She advised me to feed him chicken and rice and watch for further signs.  Now, he has one episode of BLOODY diarrhea, and my vet has gone home for the day, so I called the 24 hr vet that she recommended (Not the one I saw the other night) and I was told to continue to watch him for signs of dehydration/lethargy.  My dog seems to be acting fine, but shouldn't I be concerned about the bloody vomit/diarrhea?  Has anyone else dealth with this?

Thanks for the advice.  I took him back to the vet this morning because he had the bloody diarrhea all night.  They sedated him and took full-body films, but did not see anything other than a slightly enlarged spleen and arthritis.  They prescribed 2 antibiotics, and told me to continue giving him the sucralfate, and keep his diet bland (boiled chicken and rice).  He seems to be feeling a bit better, and he is not vomitting anymore, but he still has the yucky diarrhea.  I swear, he's indestructible.  I appreciate the replies.  Thank you!

Just seeing this. How are things going today?  I was going to suggest possible some bread and possibly a little cooking oil.
I will say years ago (when everyone gave dogs bones), my folks almost lost one of their Doxies after giving them pork chop bones.  Yes, one was bleeding as it has ripped up her intestines. I was small and don't remember what the Vet did but she did survive.  If the bleeding continues, I would definitely be back at the Vet's office.
Great advice from MisFits and good tip about the Cat Lax. Never heard that before.  I'll have to try to remember that.
Please keep us posted and hope everything will be okay.

Not sure if he broke the bone up, or if he swallowed it whole.  I wasn't in the room, and I get conflicting stories from my son, who tried to wrestle the bone away from him.  By the time my son called me into the room, the bone was nowhere in sight.  (He was afraid to call for help sooner because I had just warned him to watch the steak around the dog.... now he feels AWFUL.) There was NO SIGN of the bone on the xray, and the emerg vet said that it could have been mixed up with the food that he had just eaten, and that's why they would prefer to get more than one view.  My regular vet, however, said that the xray should have shown something, fragments or otherwise.  I like the idea of the "Cat Lax." Everything is closed now, but I will get soem in the morning.  Thanks for the advice, and I will definitely make sure he is seen again before the weekend. =)

Damn.....Don't you just hate surprises???

Oh yea, Hello & welcome....Lets talk about the bone....5" COOKED bone, correct?...Did your dog eat it? Chew it up in pieces? Or swallow it whole?

The one xray...Was it of the stomach or intestines? And it showed NO bone anywhere?

Now the poop question: Have you checked his poop for bone fragments? Yes, I mean it.....You need to know if the bone is passing through his system.....Take a stick or something and search through it...Do you see any bone?

The bloody vomit could be from either the richness of the bone OR the bone fragments....The Sucralfate is to coat the stomach for bleeding.....The Bloody Diarrhea again is from the richness of the bone or the bone fragments as they pass through...

I believe it will pass....If you are not seeing any signs of blockage.....If this bone was swallowed whole, then I'd be worried...If not, then I would wait and see.....

If you have a Petstore near you that's open, you can go get the "Cat Lax" for hairballs.....It's actually a thick gel and comes in a tube....It's flavored!  Squeeze about 3 inches onto your finger & put in the roof of your dog's mouth.....

How this works: The dog licks & swallows it....As it's digested, the gel coats the foreign object (In this case, bones) & helps to basically slide them through the digestive system!
This trick was taught to me by my Vet....And it worked!

I can't think of anything else....I hope someone else will come by and offer advice.....Please, come back and let us know what happens....Karla

Remember, tomorrow is Friday & you don't want him to get worse during the weekend....Just a heads-up.....
