C diff.

My dog is paralyzed from ruptured discs in her back despite surgery.  She obviously has no bowel or bladder control secondary to this.  She has been on antibiotics twice for a urinary tract infection in the last 16 months.  She has never had diarrhea but since she does occasionally have an accident in the house, I was curious whether a human can get C diff from her.  I never had her tested but my 11 year old son contracted c diff following antibiotic therapy and I'm not sure if he picked it up from the dog since they can be carriers of the clostridium species.  Please let me know.

I was just diagnosed with C.diff. It was bottom of the list of things our doctor thought I would have that would account for my 2-3 month long diarrhea. Not on any anti-biotics for years. The only hospital type contact was multiple visits to a vet. hospital some months before with dog with unrelated issue. .  Timing was perfect for when symptoms started. That's all I can think of that would account for my contracting it. Far from iron clad cause/effect but -----

I am very close to positive that it could be passed from animal to person through the feces.  Is your dog on an antibiotic for this bacteria?  It is a serious infection and needs to be treated strong antibiotics like flagyl or vancomiacin.  Best to you!

That's a really good question about c-diff.  I "think" it can pass from humans to dogs and vice versa, but I'm not absolutely certain.  You can get a reliable answer from Med Help's veterinarian Dr. Cheng, on the Ask a Vet forum.  She volunteers her time so participation is free.  All the best!
