Cyst or Sty on Dog's Eye?

Hi, so I have a 9 year old Black Lab who has had a cyst or a sty growing on his upper eyelid. It's grown slightly in the past year, and there was one night when my mother said she saw that the sty was bleeding slightly. We can't take him to the vet until the middle of June, but does anyone know if this is something that would require immediate medical attention?

couple of days ago we noticed what looked like a sty on the top lid of my Bug s eye. Tonight the eye was almost swollen shut. . I plan to take her to the vet  tomorrow. No one spoke of swelling with a possible sty. She doesn t seem bothered by it at all.

I agree with what the latter two said regarding Taz1 comment:
I am in the same situation with my dog, but I just had heart surgery, my dog is 17 yrs old.  I was a critical care nurse at the time my dog was "dumped" out in the country and decided to adopt us. We then realized she was full of heart worms, but she survived that awful therapy.  7 years later, I am now fully disabled and can't afford to go to the vet, much less pay for surgery.  But I have always taken very good care of my animals, I read Taz1 response, and I couldn't decide if I wanted to cry out of guilt for not going to the vet, or rip the "1" off of Taz1 username.    Karma is a .........

Tazz1, sometimes people have animals first and then fall on hard financial times, often due to no fault of their own. Your attack on people with animals by comparing them to you is a turn-off. When people have a hard time coming up with money, does that mean they should give up their pets? Would you give up your child? No, we come to forums like these where people (KIND people) will steer us in the right direction in order to help the animal without re-mortgaging the home. Try a little empathy. Life doesn't play fair with some people and helping them is a far nobler thing than bashing them.

My pug had a small sty on the inside bottom lid. Watching it but not too worried as he had one on the top outside lid on the other eye and it went away. When I got back home 3 hours later, it has spread over to the middle of the lid and is kind of red...should I take him to the vet tomarrow or wait..what did you do??

Hello everyone, I want to thank you all for taking the time to write in your experiences with your dogs. I own 2 dogs both of which are rescues and they are my best friends. My male pit bull (Stash) who is currenty 10 years old has a stye growing on his eye. I am going to make an appointment tomorrow for him again because the first time I took him into the vet they told me that the stye was pretty small and if it got any larger and started to rub on the cornea then we would have to remove it, since then (6mos ago) it has slowly gotten bigger and I noticed today that it is no longer pink but has changed to a dark brown color. Anyway, thanks for all of your comments and I agree with not berating people who own dogs and cant always afford to rush them to the vets, I do my best by them and their needs certainly come way before mine but as they get older the health care costs go up and you just never know how much something is going to cost until you get intot he vet. I have paid thousands of dollars over the years for medical procedures that they have needed (no exaggeration) and I would do it all over again..but, berating people doesnt help get the point across. A couple of things here.  First of all, the post you are responding to is four years old, and chances are very good that the person who posted the original question has not been here in almost that long.  

Secondly, we try here to help people, not berate them.  Not everyone who posts here realizes the potential urgency of the situations they are asking about, so rather than berating them or belittling them, it is better to try to explain the situation and to educate them.  If you educate them, they will then see the urgency on their own, but if you belittle them, it will create an atmosphere of hostility and those words will fall on deaf ears.  As frustrating as some situations can be to read about, please remember to always be as polite as you can and try to help the person see why their current course of action might not be the best.

If your 8 year old child had a cyst on her upper eyelid or any part of the eye would you just try and avoid it and hope it does not hurt or gets better?  We are talking about animals here!  They cannot communicate with you how their growths around or on their eyes are feeling.  If an animal has any growth on or around their eye they should see a vet asap!  If you do not have money to pay for any procedure to help your animal with his medical problems or cannot get someone to help you in taking care of the health of your animal then maybe you should not take the responsibility of owning an animal.  It is not fair to the animal if you cannot afford to treat them and help them for some of their medical conditions and this happens to be one of them.   I don't mean to upset anyone but my dog had several growths around both eyes and when I found out I immediately had them removed and my dog is 15 years old.  Sometime these growths that occur around the animal's eyes causes them not to even be able to shut their eyes properly.

Hi my 6 month old lab/rottie I think has a sty in his lower right eyelid. I was looking at him yesterday and noticed a small cucumber seed size lump. I thought maybe he hit it cause hes clumsy. Can anyone help me find out whether its a sty or not? I've never seen one. I have a picture. Im concerned because I caught him itching and it seems bigger as well as broken open and bleeding. Please help thanks.

I nearly missed your question, it was tucked away here at the end of an old post...Anyway, it sounds like he will have to have that one taken off too. Was the whole thing reoved last time? Or was it a cyst that was drained, but the cyst's "capsule" left behind? If that was the case, they can fill up again.
The majority of tumors on dogs' eyelids are benign, but they do need to be removed if at all possibe as they cause great irritation to the eye.
(I know a dog right now, a neighbour's dog, who has one of these, and his owners have opted to leave it alone. It pains me to see his poor eye, red and inflamed, weeping with greenish pus....
I bathe it for him with lukewarm salt water, or echinacea and water if I get the chance. But I know he really needs it removed.)

My Beagle is 7 now but had one removed from his eyelid about 2 years ago. It cost around $200; however, it has since returned in the past 6 months so I do not know what to do about it now.

I took my pug to the vet yesterday . He has a little reddish lump on the center of his eye. He is not irratated by it, no pawing rubbing his face etc. Acting completely normal. Anyway they did a corneal ulcer test with the dye. Nothing . But are treating it as that. We go back this Friday. It is still there Nd has not gotten worse, but I am concerned cause he said it could be a deep ulcer. Which I looked up and can burst! Should I go tomorrow to the nearest dog eye doctor instead of waiting 2 more days?

Sounds like that could be an ingrowing hair. I think the best thing would be for the vet to treat it as soon as possible, as it's in hair's very nature to continue to grow, so if it's growing round and round, and invading tissue, it will only get worse.

Our yellow lab (10 yrs old) has a stye or cyst on the bottom lid of both eyes. Our vet has looked at them numerous times and said if it doesn't bother her, don't worry about it.  She has already gone through numerous treatments for cancer, so now has a heart murmur. The vet said because of that, we can't put her under anethesia anymore without risking losing her (for teeth cleaning or removal of the styes/cysts). It does bleed occasionally, but that is because it may itch a little and the dog will scratch her eye, which starts the bleeding. We use eye drops to keep her eyes moist, and Stye (human OTC med) once a day. It is keeping it under control, even though it is about the size of my little finger. If you can get a prescription for an antibiotic from the vet every 2-3 months, that tends to help.

My girl has a sty that was growing on the inside of her top eyelid and now its pushing out through the top.
I am a college student and want to get it removed but am low on income, please let me know how much it would roughly cost or if anyone knows of a cheap place in illinois. Thank you 8472082071 Bryan

Hi Destiny,
Cysts can get damaged, and then bleed. It probably is draining, and that's why it seems to go away, but because cysts are 'encapsulated' (like fluid collections in membrane-covered little 'bubbles') -they can often recur if they drain. For instance, the fluid inside gets drained out, but the membrane stays so it CAN fill up again. Sometimes they can get infected, so be careful of that, especially if it is near his eye.

It's not necessarily cancer by the sound of it. A cyst is not usually malignant. But there are rare cases when a benign growth CAN turn cancerous.
However, no-one here can see it or examine it, so the best advice you could get would be your vet's advice. Best to take him in to get it checked out.

Hello, My dog is a 13 year old Border Collie and has a cyst under his eye, It starts to bleed then it goes away but it keeps on coming back. Could this be cancer?

Her stye got about the size of a marble.  Pretty big in my opinion.  Sure, if you want to email me the picture I could tell you if it is bigger or smaller than Jasmyn's.  But every dog is different, just like people.  Hopefully your dog will be ok with you haveing to wait.

Jasmyn is recovering well from her surgery and her eye looks so much better.  The Vet did say that the Stye was deeper than he actually thought it was.  He also said that he hoped he removed all of it.  I hope he did for her sake, I would hate for her to go through this again.

Hmm, the problem is, I won't be able to take my dog to the vet until June, because I'm in Los Angeles, and he's in the Bay Area, and my mother has her hands full taking care of my father's medical condition.

Thanks for the information though. Do you remember how big the Sty got on your dog? I actually have a picture of my dog's sty, I would love for you to take a look at it if at all possible.

Our 8 Year old Lab mix has had a Sty on her eye for approximately 8months to a year before we realized what is was.  She is going to have surgery to remove it today.  The Vet said that if left untreated it could result in the Sty attaching to the Cornea of her eye which would result in more pain for her as far as multiple surgeries, not to mention the cost for us.  I would recommend you take your dog in as soon as possible.  All this time we thought it was a mole on her eyelid.

I just realized you said it's bleeding, though. In that case, I'd go ahead and take him in. It could get infected or something with it bleeding like that. Better to be safe than sorry.
