Devastated

Hello everyone. My boyfriend's 3 1/2 year old German Shepard named Cash died 2 days ago. I have never seen Him cry as he did when he saw Cash lying there lifeless with blood coming out of his mouth. Cash was perfectly healthy all day, other than an ear infection. My boyfriend has cameras installed in the back yard, and we needed to know how Cash died, so we watch the recordings back. What a terrible mistake that was. Cash was perfectly fine until 2:50 am. He then walked up the balcony stairs and sat by the back door, as if waiting for someone to open it. Cash then collapsed, and was having difficulty getting up, it was even difficult to keep his head up. After about 10 minutes, Cash walked down the balcony stairs very slowly. A few minutes later, he walked back up the stairs and waited for someone to open the door, Cash collapsed again, and seemed to have no energy.  He then slowly walked down the stairs and layed down on the grass where he died at 3:40am. His leg was slowly twitching, and blood poured out of his mouth. When we checked in the morning there was some blood on the balcony. The guilt is killing us and are devastated. What happened to Cash, he was such a healthy dog. We had gotten his blood work done a few months prior. We wanted to get an necropsy, however they said if we got it done, then we would not get a private funeral or the ashes back. We chose to keep the ashes instead, couldn't bare to lose him entirely. Someone please help, what happened to our best friend?
