FCE (fibrocartilagenous embolism) is the equivalent of a stroke in the spinal column. Pieces of fibrocartilage come from the discs and get lodged in the blood vessels, causing a blockage. A dog that receives corticosteroids within 12 hours of the first symptoms can sometimes show improvement more quickly than a dog who does not receive them, but most cases of FCE will resolve themselves on their own. You will usually start to see some positive changes within 48 hours of the initial onset, but it can take longer. Full recover, however, takes weeks to months. The symptoms can be more severe on one side or the other or they can be bilateral, meaning both sides are equally affected. Hang in there. Your dog should recover on his own, but it's going to be a long road and it will require much patience on your part. Your dog's age is on his side. If he was an old dog I might advise differently, but a 3 year old dog should recover and have a mostly normal life.
