Dog bitting himself, won't let you touch the sore area...

My dog has been biting himself for the past week in two specific spots, one on his back and the other close by his butt. The original sore on his back is healing and doing well, the more recent one by his butt has been licked and bitten until now raw with blood...what to do do??

I doubt that these are Hot spots.....If these spots are not oozing liquid, then they're not hot spots...If Fleas have definately been ruled out, then I'd lean more towards an Anal Gland problem...In toy breeds it's very common and he's really trying to ease the pain in his anal area.....Biting backs goes along with it...He probably just needs his anal glands/sacs expressed.....Your Vet needs to do it....If the anal glands cannot empty on their own, infection can set in and they can rupture...Trust me, that's a mess & extremely painful & very hard to heal....It's easier to take care of it at this stage.....  He needs to get to his Vet ASAP and have these relieved.......Good luck, Karla

He is a malti-poo, and he is 3yrs old. We weretold by a Banfield rep that it was most likely hotspots so we put a cone on him to stop the biting and licking, as well as some hydrocortisone lotion, seems to be working....we're hopeful =)

Thanks so much for your advice. I put a cone on him, so he would stop the licking and biting, so that has helped. we also got a hydrocortisone lotion to put on the sores. It seems to be drying up, which is a good thing. At Banfield one of the reps was saying taht many dogs were coming in with hotspots recently....very crazy!!! My baby has never had them, so I had no idea what it even was. =)

Have you tried applying meds, like a Neosporne. This may help. But if you do this keep a watchful eye on your dog. My grandmas dog, chews at his feet til they are raw and sore. She was told to give him a bath once a week, and apply meds to the sore spots of her dog to help with the healing.

If it seems like your dog is still having issues you should consult a vet to figure out why he is doing it to himself. I will be praying for you and your dog. Goodluck

Have u checked him first fleas?  Or allergies / hot spots. Try an over the counter cortisone based cream.
