Dog lethargy after dental and anasthesia
Greetings,
We took our 8 years old german shepherd mix Rascal at 9 AM on Tuesday, May 20th to do his first dental cleaning. He was perfectly heathy dog with lots of energy, looking and acting as a young puppy. We picked him up from the vet at 5 PM and been told everything went well. As we arrived to the house, Rascal seem disoriented and couldn't even find the door to get into the house. Today is May 23. Rascal had a seizure last night (never had anything like that before) and we took him to 24 h emergency center where they did the full panel bloodwork and everything is perfectly normal. He hasn't had another seizure so far, he eats and goes to the toilet normally, but he is extremely lethargic, laying down all the time, not the normal Rascal at all. He doesn't seem to be in pain. Called his vet this morning and all he suggested was to take him to X-rays.
The anesthesia or the dental is the problem here, maybe too mush of stress, medications, etc.
Please tell me what it could be? I am really worried, it has already been 3 days after procedure!

Hello, this post hasn’t been updated in a while, but I felt like sharing my personal experience on this topic.
I have two rescue dogs, both poodle mixes, they are today around 5-6 years (no way to know for sure). Hoppi is a female(she was the first I adopted, her energetic and cheerful personality was hightly contagious), then followed my boy Butters. I adopted them when they were about 1-2 years old; they were neutered/spayed a couple months after and I felt no difference in behavior that first time.
For some reason I was very nervous about having to put down my dogs for dental cleaning (since I know that for dogs, anesthesia overall can be dangerous), so I postponed this treatment until a little over a year ago.
Besides the usual grogginess, Butters was fine a couple of hours after I brought him home, unfortunately not the same goes to Hoppi. I knew something was wrong the moment I picked her up on my arms, and she was shaking and cowering. She used to be the most playful, friendly dog ever- anyone who met her, complimented her on how amiable she was, always wailing her tail, and she used to be SO trusting on anyone she met (which sometimes made me scared she would leave with strangers when I took her to the dog park).
For the next month, Hoppi would not let anyone get close to her, pet, or pick her up (she used to be that dog that would always be resting her head or paw on you). When she sensed anyone coming close, she would just start shivering, and walking backward, could not make eye contact whatsoever. The times I tried petting her, the shrieking sound she made and remembering the pure fear on her face, still brings me to tears today... not even Butters could comfort her. We went to several vets, could not find anything physically wrong with her. We were told that sometimes dogs could be afftedted after undergoing a lot of stress, there are even cases where the dog was not fully under and so ended up feeling all the pain during the procedure. Unfortunately, there is no way to know for sure what happened, and why it happened- which makes things even more frustrating... Today, after over a year she is very slowly becoming more like her old self. She still feels the urge to suddenly hide, or feels scared sometimes but at least she seems to be making a little progress.
Obviously I know how important it is for dogs to get dental cleaning, but I just cannot fathom putting them under that experience again... at least for now.

I am really sorry that dental cleaning had such a bad effect on Hoppi. I always kept holding back on a cleaning for my dog's teeth. I was scared of it. I used to brush her teeth daily but knew she needed a scale and polish.
She was always terrified at the vet's.
Anyway, the time came when she developed breast lumps, and then there was no option but to get them removed under anesthetic.
She had 2 operations within one month, and was absolutely fine with the anesthesia. I wished I'd asked for a teeth cleaning at the same time....but I didn't because the other thing was traumatic enough. Her second op. she had a half mammary strip.
I was scared of that too, as she was 14. But she sailed through.
Sadly though, she developed hemangiosarcoma only weeks later and passed away about 2 months afterwards.
Some dogs sail through the anesthesia, even if they are getting on in years....and some dogs don't. It IS a bit of a gamble, I admit.
I am wondering if, with Hoppi, there might have been some oxygen deprivation during surgery?
My opinion is mixed. Bad teeth can cause real serious health problems, and can even affect the heart and kidneys.
But I am so wary also of anesthesia, even though our vet told me how very safe it is nowadays, and even seeing how well my own dog took it. I always feel I wouldn't put a dog in for surgery unless it was really necessary.

Hi, I took my mini Dachshund to the vet for a teeth cleaning on November 13th and she hasn't been right since. I've taken her back to the vet every week since that procedure and the last visit on December 2nd, they finally took X-rays and blood work. Her blood work came back normal but the X-rays came back with an enlarged spleen, which I believe is from the anesthesia. They gave me Amoxi and Metronidazole but she is not getting better, in fact she has gotten worse. It's been 4 days since she's been on these medications. She is still very lethargic and is shivering.

i took my doxie in for teeth cleaning. on my 12 years doxie, sadie. It took her a few days to be herself again I believe being under anesthesia did it.
but yesterday she had a bit of seizure (drunk walk) i held her then she was ok, same day in afternoon she was sitting on couch with me her head kept going back and forth and her eys were do it scared the heck out of me. called vet they said i could bring her in for bloodwork if i wanted to monday. Her seizures only lasted for a few seconds both times. Im thinking it was the medicine but would it happned 2 weeks later?

That's Wonderful news......Yes, it's poisoning, like we suspected.....Unfortunately, these older chemicals are still used because they are CHEAP!!! Doesn't matter that the risk to the pet is huge!!!
We here, also use a Holistic Vet that is licensed in Eastern & Western medicine! You really do get the best of both worlds......

PS..I called my Vet and they said they do not use it. They agreed with what was said about it..Thanks for the info..

Rascal went to holistic vet today and the information we received was staggering. Doctor has analysed the paperwork from the surgery, anesthesia records, heart chart, reports and tests from the emergency center and here is the conclusion: It was Ketamine overdose during anesthesia that caused blood-shot eyes, disorientation, toxic shock and the grand seizure. This is a very dangerous drug that injure many dogs, it was commonly used 10 years ago, but many conservative vets still using it today. Before you let your pet friend undergo a procedure requiring anesthesia, please make shire what drugs are used and do your own research...
The vet said that Rascal will recover, but it will take time and patience. So, today is a very happy day in our lives! He has been given Licorice and Milk Thistle to detox and strengthen his liver and Chinese herbal compound to balance him, its called Ban Xia Bai (subdue internal wind).
I was very impressed with the holistic vet clinic (although they offer western medicine as well). It has a feeling of the cozy house, not the hospital, has soft massage tables in carpeted exam rooms (instead of tailless steel in other hospitals). Rascal was very scared and distressed, so he hid under the massage table, I was feeling so bad for him, knowing I had to get him out of there and lift him on the table. When the doctor came in, to my surprise, she has gone under the table with him and examined him there while stroking and calmly talking to him… Its a different type of experience all together..

I am so sorry to hear about this. I am going to share a story, but this is NOT your case I am sure. Our dog kept getting Fatty Tumors and the big one was by his penis area. They had removed it, but called and ask if we wanted them to go in by his legs..So I assume they gave him more. He came home and was very disoriented and spaced out looking. This did take some time for him to come back..BUT then he started to loose his back legs and fall down. We just thought for sure it was in the brain from the drugs. Then he had a sez and it was out of no where..We had the vet come over and take his blood. NOW his blood was fine when he had the surg, but then his sugar level was very, very low when the doc came over months later. We got him in and he was to only eat small meals all day..SO he did this for days and he had another sez and he ended up with Pancreas Cancer when we finally did a really good check up. He was only 11 yrs old. NOW in this case I would just give it time for the drug to wear off..It sounds like it was way to much..Meanwhile have them do some ultra sounds around the liver, pancreas and so on. I am sure he is fine and that it is the drug. I am sure praying for Rascal and my Heart just aches so bad right now. I am so glad you are going to see another vet. Wishing you Peace of Mind during all of this..
