Dog swallowed pieces of Kong toy

Hello,

my dog, a Border Collie of almost 2 years, was playing with his new toy, Kong quest, after only 20 minutes of play, I've realized he had already tore it apart and had eaten a small piece of the toy, about 1cm size by 0.5 cm.

Should I be concerned of this? Will he be able to expell it on his own?

Hi again. Peanut butter is okay for dogs - in fact, it contains some excellent vitamins, fats and proteins. Like all things, we have to be a little careful - so it is best only to use a small amount (smeared inside the Kong) and choose a peanut butter without any salt or sugar (there are organic varieties that offer this). Obviously, if your dog has signs of allergies, it's best not to use peanut butter, because an allergic dog is likely to have allergies to peanuts as well. Tony

Margot thank you for the tip. He already defecate three or four time since he ate the piece of the toy, I've tried to see if I could spot the piece of toy but I couldn't see it.
He hasn't had any problems or strange behaviors since then so I hope he has passed it with no problems .)

For the moment he's enjoying his standard red Kong, he loves it and he keeps going back to it when he's bored.
I haven't tried with the peanut butter yet, I usually use boiled chicken or dry treats, I'm a bit skeptical with peanubutter, is that safe for dogs?

You might try giving some small pieces of bread soaked in water, not too much.or mashed potatoes or some soft canned food.  Might push it through

Hi again Caterina. Let me know how he goes with the Kong Extreme. There are good reviews about it, so hopefully it will defeat him and give him pleasure too. I don't know whether you have tried this, but smearing a very small amount of peanut butter on the inside sometimes gives very active dogs something to challenge them.

many thanks for your quick reply!

Yes he is a big determined chewer, I've tried aa lot of toys before this, ropes, stuffed animals, nylabone, and I had to take them all off his sight since he chews pieces of them off very quickly.
I never leave him alone with his toys, since I'm aware of this bad habit.

Today I've tried to give him the Kong for the first time, the classic Kong toy seems to be ok but the one he's broken is the Kong quest http://www.kongcompany.com/en-uk/products/for-dogs/interactive-toys/kong-quest/kong-quest-starpod/ which seems to made of slightly different rubber than the normal Kong, it's quite tough still but doesn't seem to be extremely hard like usual plastic for example.

As you said I'll keep an eye on him, and in case I see any of the symptoms listed I'll contact the vet. The only thing I've noticed is a lightly cough while he was biting my arm to play, but he usually always has it when he tries to play with us, sometimes it can just be that a hair or a fluff from the clothing irritated his thoath however it's not something persistent.

I've placed an order for the Kong Extreme and Kong Extreme ball, they should arrive this week and hopefully they will last for a while and survive his jaws .)

Hi. Well, your Collie must have been determined. It is very unusual for a Kong to get destroyed in this way. On the plus side, if the piece that's been swallowed is the size you say, it should pass through without problem. I am assuming the Kong is the type that is manufactured from slightly soft material? If the Kong is a harder material, then there would be more concern about trauma to the throat and intestinal tract.

Look out for any change in your dog's general behavior, particularly any signs of discomfort, persistent stretching or arching of the back, lethargy or a refusal to eat. If any of these symptoms become apparent over the next 24 hours, contact your vet.

It might be worth trying the more indestructible type of Kong with your dog. They make one called Kong Original Extreme Dog Chew, and I would suggest giving him this under supervision only, at least until you are certain he isn't able to chew bits off it.
