Dog training for people.

This is the first time I have joined a forum of this type.I do not think I have the patience for this as it makes me very frustrated and helpless.

One thing I do know and that is ! everyone who wants to keep a pet should pass a test on their ability to look after and care for that animal. And if they fail they should do a course on how to learn the basics at the very least.

What I cannot understand is why they do not have classes in schools to teach this.Don't the powers that be understand that there are lives at stake! and to you my dog loving  friends I know that because to some they are just animals ...We know different ......the unconditional love  work and support they give us should be repaid with the best care we can offer them, not treated like some disposable article or toy. They feel pain as we do... they feel loneliness,  sadness and hopelessness.

Sorry guys it just gets to me sometimes. It comes down to The Duty of Care ..One thing I do know is that a lot of our pets are a lot more intelligent than people they live with      .GRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I totally understand where your frustration is coming from seeana.  We expect everyone who owns a pet to hold them as sacred as we do.  Reality tells a different story.  Hopefully by these forums others will learn and feel the importance of our family members, our pets.

We got a pup last fall, she was a little over 6 weeks when she came, already weened off her momma.  She is 1/2 chocolate lab/german short hair.  Upon arriving she was throwing up which we figured normal due to the car ride and change of scenery.  By early morning we knew something else was wrong.  Took her to the vet and she had parvo.  We spent 3 LONG LONG days and nights not knowing if she would make it or not, numerous calls to the vet etc.  The 4th day the phone rang early in the a.m.....Come get your pup!!  You could hear here barking and whining in the back!!!   We then enrolled her in puppy training.  It was a 6 week course and it was more for us than her.  The best thing we ever did.  Today she is almost 11 months old, naughty, playful and has brought such joy to this house.  My pets are my best friends, my companions and the love i feel for them is out of this world~~~~~~sara

I always go in boots an all. I too abhor the treatment that our poor defenceless animals have inflicted on them( see license to keep a pet)post.

heres a great end to a bad story. here in GA a man got stoped for running a stop sign(praise the LORD he did)  when the police got to car he heard a dog barking in the trunck. police made him open it and there was a small dog sitting in a big black pot, with chilli pepper/onions/peppers and oil all over him. he told the officer the dog keeps making him made so he was going cook him when he got home. OMG my heart was so broken for this fur-baby . i just cant even think of how anyone could do that. he was a sicko. police took that baby to vet had him cleaned up and they reported back on news he has a great home now.

I guess the thing that bothers me about our Animal Control in this town is that it is just a job to this guy and all the "feelings" for doing a good job has just gone out the window.  These animals are living, breathing beings who have feelings and feel pain and thrive with love.  They arent just dogs.  This "person" would of been in big trouble had they been caught helping this little thing out.  Way messed up...........

Off to put my eggs in the hot sun!!!

What a

heartwarming story!!!! to that person that who helped that pup I send the love that was shown to that poor little scrap. This is what duty of care means.
I think that the stocks should be brought back into the city square with plenty of rotton eggs on the side.

I have a neighbor who decided to get a beagle puppy.  Now mind you i have a beagle who will soon be 13 yrs old so i am rather partial to this breed.  This puppy was left out on a chain all day long, always tangled up not able to get to her water or food that was non existant as the birds nabbed it.  The only type of attention this poor little thing got was screaming shut up AND the owner coming outside and picking this little thing up BY the chain and throwing the pup to the ground.  Animal control was called by many of us,many times(have to follow protocol here in this town) and all AC would say is there is a bowl for water and food.  HELLO this poor puppy is abused......Long story short, the puppy "mysteriously" disappeared one night and i hear she is doing well with a family that loves her!!!!

Thanks so much guys.  I wade in where angels fear to tread sometimes,I just cant help it ! (well I can but I wont) I understand completely where you are coming from EL and I answer most of those "questions" anyway to the best of my ability as I know those dogs wont end up at the vets.

Australia in the seventies.....well most dogs were kept outside,German Shepherds  were banned in Western Australia as they thought they might breed with the Dingo's(can you believe that) but now it is the other way around you still get the Aussie Ocker type that say dogs should be outside but they are in the minority.

We have more pets per ca pita than anywhere in the western world. So its a real turn around thank god.Oh Ginger it would be great if we could put your thoughts on Registration into action ,not in my lifetime ....maybe yours, you are an old soul.

But like everywhere else we have those lowlifes ( Ferals we call them) that have not got the brains they were born with, and as El said the dogs have more brains than them.
I do not know why I ended up here!! I was looking up Fibromyalgia and saw this section
Its the only dog forum I am on,I like the set up ! the regular.s... in fact the whole set up.
Never did go onto the Fibro forum.lol.

Drives me nuts when someone says the dog has been in laying around for a week in pain and not eating anything, I can't afford a vet.  You can afford a computer, though...If you can't afford a pet, please don't get one.  Put money aside for emergencies, because there will be some when you own a dog or cat, then you will be ready to help them.

There are many, many excuses that people use to abandon their pets......

The worst I've heard was: "The little poodle didn't match the NEW couch color"!  So, the poodle had to go..............I did WEEP!!!!      ;(      Karla

Seanna, you already have given such a lot here, so thank you!
I totally agree, by the way, that there should be courses in pet ownership, with first-aid included, and registration (somehow) of pet ownership....These are living beings, and anyone serious about owning a pet would find these things very easy to comply with. I know I would. If I were in the position of really really wanting a dog, and had to do a two-week long course in order to pass or fail, I would.

It's strange that the rules should be so strict about owning a car (which, granted is a very dangerous thing if driven by someone unqualified) but anyone can own a dog.

I just watched a program on tv Panorama on BBC, where it showed peoples' irresponsibility with dogs leading to those dogs ending up in a shelter, from where more than 40% of them had to be euthanized. Even healthy dogs....it made me almost weep.
Some people were turning dogs over to the shelter simply because that Soul "didn't fit into their lifestyle anymore"
Can you believe that?

You need a license to drive a car, catch a fish and kill a deer, but any idiot can own a dog (or other animal).

A license should be REQUIRED to own animals of any sort, of that I am a firm believer.

And not only a license, but  some sort of "ability to maintain financial responsibility" form/contract as well.

Too many people get animals and then say "My puppy has a bone stuck in it's throat, but I can't afford to take him/her to the vet. What should I do?!?"

I'm sorry... I feel sorry for any animal that's in a house where they are the higher intelligence, and by the sounds of many of the posts we see here (in this forum), that's a lot of them.

Good post, by the way. I feel certain that you've just voiced what 99% of us feel.

My 2 cents.

Goodness it is a credit to the Vet, yourself and the strength of your pup that she pulled through. As I type this  I am surrounded by 3 large lumps of love who over the years have been my rocks it seems it is their duty in life to love,  protect  and make me laugh
I find it incomprehensible that there are people out there that would use and abuse them.
I know all we can do Sara is to carry on and do the best we can.If I see any sign of cruelty I wade right in as hell hath no fury.I am sure the members on here would be surprised I would do that .....LOL.
Thank You angel for your reply.
