Dry skin and hair loss on my daschund

I am a new dog owner and my 10 month old dapple daschund has dry spots and she is loosing hair on these spots. She has some on her back, on her head and in the breast area. Can I put some kind of cream? We have had her checked by the vet and he sold us some shampoo for the problem however it seems to be getting worst.
