EnglishBulldog skin,eyes and ears

My bulldog is 3 years old and he has developed really bad foul odor and raw skin on his face, neck, and underbelly. He has been on Steroid injections for 3 months now and they help for a few weeks and then it gets bad again. The odor is constantly though.I give him 1 bath a week and use either Keta based shampoo or an oatmeal natural shampoo to minimize any further irritation. Also he has had entropion surgery and laser done on his eyelashes when he was one.Is it common to have to repeat that procedure every few years.I was considering getting him a mini facelift...Haha. Actually i was wondering if i had some of his nasal fold removed if that would help with the facial redness and oder around his face.I clean his eyes and ears daily. Also his ears keep a bacteria infection all the time.I treat them with Trizeta flush and Baytril. If any advice please let me know .Thankyou

Hello and Welcome...This sounds like a Yeast Infection to me...IMO, there is a very distinct odor! The Steroid Injections help the inflamation (inflammation) (For a short time), but will not resolve the problem. The antibiotics only make it worse! I suspect his ear problems are yeast, also. I would ask your Vet to treat for yeast. There are fungal medications by presription and he/she could prescribe one. Now, on your part: NO, Do not remove any nasal fold. That is unnecessary pain and surgery for him! Do a search on things to avoid for yeast problems. NO corn, wheat, or soy in his food is a place to start. Also, a GOOD probiotic (From a healthfood store or other reliable source) is a must! Read up about probiotics and their benefits. Upgrade his food, if you are feeding a grocery store brand....Hope this will give you some ideas and good luck to you both...Let us know how he's doing.....Karla

Hi there.  I've been dealing with yeast for 5 yrs in my dog.  If there's anything I know about....it's yeast.  The smell is unmistakable.  My dog has red drainage from her eyes and around her mouth and her saliva stinks.  That's my first clue before all the other symptoms start.  Surgery isn't the answer.  The yeast will just manifest some other way on some other body part. The skin rash that you're talking about is something close to diaper rash in children.

To nip it in the bud, I balanced my dogs ph, limited food to canned buffalo (for about 6 months), added a vitamin, & probiotics.  And, expect the symptoms to worsen before they get better.  Watch the anal glands....and the ears.  The anal glands seem to fill up really fast when the yeast starts to die off....that's my best guess anyway.  We're talking full glands every couple of days! The vet can't explain it.  They can get infected and then you're back on antibiotics, and the yeast loves that.

Your vet should be able to test for yeast on the skin, ears, anal gland fluid.  If it's bad enough they should prescribe a course of anti- fungals.  Those will help temporarily, but this is a big picture problem.

He has just recently developed yeast on his tail. His nasal fold is causing his eyelids to rub his eyes again, and we know that the time is getting close to where he will start getting ulcers on his eyes again if he dont have some of the fold removed. Before it was he had entropion that was causing the ulcers but now its coming from the wrinkle...Do you have a bulldog as well? Thanks for the info on the food.If any more help you can provide please let me know....Sluggo's mom
