Help ASAP! my dog has black eyes(the color) possible glaucoma or cataracts??

I have a 9 year old yellow lab I adopted as a puppy from humane society. Now he's 9 yrs old and I notice his eyes went from brown to solid black. And they are always ozzy with green gunk. He also can not hardly see at all anymore.  I gave him 10 days of penicillin because everyone said it was eye infection. But did not help at all. Benadryl seems to help a little with the ozzing but I have lived in same home with no changes to anything since I got him so I do not feel its allergies. Would this possibly be a more serious condition like cataracts or glaucoma or a tumor? And what signs do I look for? My vet wants him to see a specialist hours away thousands of dollars. Does anyone have any idea what it can be and what my best step next is? I don't want to spend thousands if he's already blind and nothing can help. I take very good care of him and I'll do what I have to do I just would like some conformation as to what's really going on so I can gain some more knowledge into my options. Thank you.

Cataracts or glaucoma tend to turn the eyes a milky color. That said, an acute glaucoma attack is extremely painful and can be a medical emergency. It sounds more like an infection or possibly a loss of tear production/dry eye which can create a lot of oozy gunk.

I would think you could get an initial consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist for a few hundred dollars at most. At least then you would know if you were dealing with something very painful and/or life threatening.

I am so sorry to read this but I have no idea what this could be.  I would think your own Vet would know if this is Glucoma or cataracts.  
There is no place closer to take him? Any teaching hospitals?  Maybe call around and see if another Vet closer to you may have more experience?
