Help needed quickly

Our dog just came home (we live way out in the country) and he seems to be in a great deal of pain. We can't get a clear idea of just where the pain is. Our vet in town is closed now, so we'd have to drive 50 miles to the ER for animals which costs a fortune. My dog is worth any cost, but we just don't have the money. Can I give him some aspirin? He is a shephard/sheltie mix and weighs approx. 50 pounds.
Thank you so much

I am glad you found your answer and also about the pain meds for her pain. We have had dogs in the past that had that problem and our vet just said nothing they can give him.

As far as this best answer thing I find it said we have to make a contest out of people and their pets to find answers we all look for from time to time.

Axel is doing great.........like it never happened, so we had a horrible scare that turned out good. We absolutely hate having to limit his freedom, but we did decide it's for the best. The "country" has changed so much in the past 20 years, I think my husband and I just didn't want to accept that we would have to go back to "city ways" to keep our animals safe. I know you can't stop progress but it makes me sick what it's doing to animals, and not just my dogs. The deer, the coyotes, the Bobcats............they are all disappearing from our fields and pastures.
Paradise really is getting paved.................
Again I thank all of you from my heart for your words of sympathy and support and encouragement. And also for convincing us that letting our dogs roam freely was not really the best for them.
With gratitude

I'm just so glad to hear that your dog is OK!!  :D

I know how disheartening it must be to you that you moved to the country so that your dogs could have freedom and now you are second-thinking letting them do that.  I think, however, that you're making a wise decision by curtailing their running.  Depending upon where you live, the country can be quite a dangerous place for a free-roaming dog.

Although the country seems like an idyllic place for a dog, snakes, hawks, scorpions, and even neighbors who don't like animals are extremely dangerous for loose dogs.  It's much, much safer for all concerned to keep your dog in a fenced-in area unless you decide to go for a walk, and then a flexi-lead is the safe way to go rather than having your dog off-leash entirely.

Happy to read you got him to the Vet.  We love to see our animals run free and enjoy themselves, however, sometimes they just don't know what if good for them. I have friends who have country properties but they have fenced in large areas for their dogs.  I'm not thrilled with the idea but one uses hot wire (could  not afford to fence in a large area at this time).  Glad all turned out well and you take a big sigh of relief.  :-)

I just saw this now.  I am so happy your baby is feeling better.  There is nothing worse than having one of them not feeling good and not know why.

By the way, i think the best answer feature blows....

Greenlydia....I am glad your dog is OK. A few more days rest and he'll be a lot better it sounds like it anyway,
I kind of agree with you about the "best answer" thing. It's always nice to be told you gave "the best answer" of course, but there have been times when my answer was chosen as "the best" and yet I have seen other answers equally as helpful, and maybe even more....
And what it really is all about is getting in there and helping out with whatever knowledge or intuition we've got. If by any chance the best answer thing gets to be a competition, it kind of defeats the object of us all being complementary to each other as a good team. Let's hope that doesn't happen....we don't have to compete, all we have to do is help....

I'm a CL on the Anxiety Forum, which doesn't mean anything at all, except for the fact that I totally disagree with this "Best Answer" contest C*R*A*P and I refuse to participate in something I find unfair and unkind. You ALL gave me great advice, you were ALL wonderfully sympathetic and supportive. In short, you ALL gave me the BEST ANSWER.
I'm sorry that I'm keeping someone from gaining another point.........I hope you can understand my reasoning.

We got him to the vet on Friday. An X-ray showed some minor disc problem. He was put on Rimadyl for pain and inflammation.
He pretty much just layed around all day Saturday and by that night he was walking good, just a bit of a wobble now and again, and today he was out chasing squirrels. (Which we made him stop and come in the house)
I know you all know how relieved we are. My husband and I are rethinking letting our dogs roam free. It's one of many reasons we moved here and will be really sad to restrict them. But I'd rather have them safe.
Thanks to everyone who posted...........I knew what HE needed, it was ME who needed some hugs!
Thank you for being here.

Sorry to hear about your dog. I trust that you were able to get him appropriate treatment last night.

Growing up we also lived in the country and a number of our dogs were able to run free. Many of us think that this is safe, but this is not always the case. There are many dangers in the country.

Please post an update so that we know how he is doing.

What are your dog's symptoms that make you think he's in pain?  If it's a lameness issue, then confine him to a small area, preferrably a crate, and keep him quiet until morning when you can take him to your vet.

If it seems as though he is in abdominal pain or if he's trying to vomit or getting up and down and unable to get comfortable, then you need to get him to an ER Vet TONIGHT because he could have gastric torsion/volvulus (bloat) where the stomach flips over on itself and twists.  This is a life threatening condition and he will not survive until morning without veterinary intervention.

Please let us know what is going on.

So sorry to hear about your dog.  You can't tell why he is in pain?  Does it seem to be some internal problem or external (leg, back, etc) problem?
I cannot recommend an OTC that you might give, esp since you aren't sure of what is going on.
I will copy this for you
OTC pain medicines like ibuprofen, naxoproxen or acetaminophen can kill a dog. If a dog eats these OTC drugs,

Does your Vet have an answering service that takes calls after hours?  If not, I would give the ER clinic a call and see what they have to say.  Perhaps they would let you use a credit card, if you have one, or make arrangements for a payment plan.
Sorry, hate to see your dog suffering.

I would try to keep him as quiet as possible and try to determine why he might be in so much pain.
