Human Medicine and Dogs

I found a website that stated it was okay to give dogs certain human medicines, like Benedryol for doggy allergies or Peptol Bismol for doggy stomach aches etc. Is this true?

Yes, it is true.  But remember that some human medications are NOT safe for dogs, and that the ones that are must be 'cut down' to accomodate a dog's smaller-than-human weight.  If you are ever unsure about this, call your local vet and ask first. - Blu

Well yes, but it can be tricky.  Tiny dogs are not safe to do it with.  If you don't read ingredients, you can make mistakes.  Bigger dogs do fine (usually) with Benadryl, but if you were to get the one with a decongestant also, that would be a big mistake.  I am surprised if Pepto Bismol is safe.  Usually generic meds are pretty affordable from the vet, and it's just the vet visits that are expensive.  People who understand medications for whatever reason often do buy human meds and give them to their dogs, but they know what is and isn't likely to be safe.
