Infected Eye

Hi I have a a 13 year old golden retriever. He has developed this black ring around his eye that is infected.  We took him to the vet and they gave us drops and oral anitbiotic and it doesn't seem to be helping.  Could this be demodectic mange mites?  Or is it just an infection.  There also seems to be a small growth in the area.  I attached a picture.

You might want to start a new post as that was from 2011.

Google "Organic Pet Digest" Click on "Ask A Vet Library" (Left hand side of page)...It will bring up various aliments...Scroll through till you see "Eye Problems".....There will be descriptions w/pictures to look at......

I think it's Mange, too....... Let me know what you think....Karla

Oh forgot to mention his actual eye looks fine.  It's just that ring and oozing.

Thanks for the responses!  There is def some hair loss and the skin seems a bit crusty.  It's making his eye puss which I'm assuming is b/c of the irritation.  We've been cleaning it constantly and he's on antibiotics for "infection" which was the original diagnosis.  Since it wasn't getting better I looked online and thought the closest thing would be mange.  Weird he gets it now at his old age but never had this issue before.  Going back to the vet this week.

I'm looking for photos, too...So far, nothing......It seems Connie and I are on the same wave-length.....

Can you describe it any better? Red, swollen, crusty, oozing, anything? I'm not getting much from your photo.....What does the eye itself look like?

If it was mange, the ring would be hairless.....Is there loss of hair? I can't tell....I'll keep looking, also.....Karla

Hi There....
Very interesting photo...I did enlarge it to try and get a good look. I don't have any idea what it might be. I tried doing some internet searches, looking for similar photos, but no luck.  If it is demodectic mites, your vet can check for that easy enough. But I wonder...if it was mites, wouldn't you think both eyes would be infected...?
I will do some more searching on the web to see if I come up with a similar photo...there use to be a dog dermatology web site full of photos, unfortunately, they no longer allow access unless you are a student of theirs.
Can you tell me if there hair around the eye is gone, or just discolored...?
As far as the growth on the eye, it might just be a skin tag....
Hopefully someone on this forum will be able to give you a better idea of what the problem is...until then...I'll do a little more surfing....!
