Large Bumps on my dogs back

My 2 year old pit bull has large bumps all over his back. They started when I fed him pedigree so I changed his food and they subsided but then started back up. But while I'm at work he bites and scratches at them so much that they've opened up and started to bleed, scab over, and bleed again. On top of that his skin is very dry and cracked around the bumps and is slowly losing hair around them. I've tried benedryl but all it does is knock him out so he cant itch. 3 days on benedryl non stop and they have not subsided. Can anyone tell me what's happening to him? I can't take him to the vet because my car is broke right now. Someone help.

That's good news, but it has taken quite a long time since the 22nd Sept to get him to a vet ... I just hope the infection hasn't caused other problems. It will almost certainly take longer to resolve due to the amount of time it has had to spread and grow. Please come back and let us know what the vet prescribes and what he suggests may be causing the reaction. Hopefully, with the appropriate treatment, your best friend will soon be feeling much better. Tony

Just got into my vet for tomorrow because I rose hell and sent an email and picture of my dogs back. They think it's exactly what you were saying. We will see if they actually prescribe me something for him. *fingers crossed*

I agree you need to see the vet as soon as possible. Gold Bond medicated baby powder will sometimes help soothe the itch until you can get there but you need antibiotics.

Please, please don't use the motor oil. Years ago I had a dog that was the only survivor of a large litter because the owner had used motor oil to try to kill fleas. Every other pup died.

Unfortunately, while baby shampoo is gentle, it does still dry the skin (like all soaps), which could actually cause more irritation. I think this is a dog that needs to see a vet, straight away, as it is clearly in discomfort and probably has infected tissue. Tony

A bath in gentle shampoo (i suggest baby shampoo) may ease his discomfort some until you can get to the vet.  Baby shampoo is gentle enough to use every day, but I think every other day at most would be better: you don't want his skin to remain moist for any period of time. - Blu

Change your vet, go to another one. There is obviously an allergic reaction going on here and probably now an infection. Your dog needs anti-inflammatory meds, an antibiotic and/or other skin calming creams, such as a hydro cortisone. Do NOT put motor oil on your dog. This is toxic and will probably kill your dog. Tony

Already made an appointment but it is not going to be for another
2 weeks. (this is why I don't really like my vet, they are always too
packed) Someone told me to try putting motor oil on him. But I don't
want him to lick off himself.

Ask a friend for a ride to the vet.  Your poor dog is very uncomfortable and needs to have this treated as soon as possible. - Blu
