Oh poor little thing! Anyway she's hopefully going to get better now, it's good news that the cause was identified, and treatment started. She should be OK.
Good for you doing such a great job keeping fluids down her.
Never mind the electric bill! Live now, pay later....lol
Hi Ginger!
Just wanted to let you know that Tippy is at the vet's and the vet feels that she had a severe allergic reaction to a spider bite on her nose! He has given her fluids and antibiotics, antidiarrheal, antivomiting, antispider (he he) not really but the rest of the meds are real. She had a fair bit of blood in her stool last night and then when the vet took her temp there was a lot of blood on the thermometer. They are going to feed her and see if she can keep some food down (gastro intestinal food). This is such a relief and the vet said I did a good job keeping her hydrated as she wasn't too dehydrated really.
Thank you again for you support and assistance and I am going to be really happy to bring her home safe and sound $500.00 or more later! ***** to be the electric company I guess! he he
Lots of Hugs,
Rena
You are so right! Money is just a big pain in the arse sometimes!
So today Tippy is still dealing with the diarrhea but so far no vomiting. She seemed to have a little bit of a good spell last night and was drinking from her bowl...then the diarrhea again. This has been a very tough weekend considering I am dealing with symptoms of my MS and hubby working.
I am going to take Tippy to the vet tomorrow as soon as I can since she hasn't eaten since Thursday 5:00p.m. I hope that they will run a few blood tests at least to rule out anything serious. She isn't vomiting any more and with the diarrhea I think it's more cramps in her tummy that's making her want to go out cause there is no food in her now...only bits of water. She still is showing no interest in food either so I won't push it that's for sure. I will let you know what comes of this and again...thank you for being there for me and my little Tippy!
Hugs,
Rena
I know it's a positive sign that she goes to her water bowl to drink something, but it actually is important not to let her drink too much at once. That can cause a cycle of vomiting/drinking sometimes which is hard to stop, and can exacerbate dehydration. It might sound illogical, but you have to actually RATION her water. Get her to drink very small amounts every half hour or so, and try to keep that going. It has better chance of staying down you see.
I totally understand about the money issue! It is hard, I know. You will have to trust your instincts with her, and I guess if she needs the vet, that's one electricity bill which will have a late payment! That's what used to happen with me. I've lost count of the times the Electricity Company would threaten me with disconnection, because I'd paid the vet instead! Life is a bummer sometimes isn't it?
Thank you for responding!
Well I gave her 6ml of water via the syringe and she seemed to like it...she then went to her water dish and drank some water on her own. I thought, Yay...she is feeling better.
However, about 10 minutes ago she vomited and had a watery, bright yellow bowel movement. I am getting really worried about her. My hubby gets home from work in two hours so I guess I will wait for him and see what he thinks. I am concerned that it might be a spider bite or something like that because she is always snuffling around in everything...shoulda called her snoopy. I just gave her some more water and she drank some on her own again so we shall see what happens.
I will let you know how things go from now on when I can. So far so good but time will tell. Thank you again for helping me out here...we all know how hard it is to make the decision to go to the vet cause we all know if we do it will be a good chunk out of the savings. I know we shouldn't bring money into it but it is a fact of life.
Hugs,
Rena
Well you are doing the right thing trying to keep her hydrated, that's for sure. The danger -especially for a tiny dog of constant vomiting and diarrhea is dehydration is a given. I am just concerned that you will not be able to get enough fluids down her and get her to keep them down, to combat the certain dehydration.
That is the main issue right now.
The cause of the vomiting and diarrhea....hard to guess. It may be some food she ate which she shouldn't have....it may be infection...I don't know.
Normally the way to cure diarrhea and vomiting is total withholding of food -all food- for 24 hours, with just plain water in very frequent small amounts, nothing else. But if there is something else going on, like infection etc, then this simple remedy probably isn't enough.
I'd say if she is actually keeping the water down that you are managing to get into her via the syringe -then just keep on doing that for the next 24 hours. Try to get her to drink as much as you possibly can, in small amounts at a time. But you will have to work at it, and you can forget getting any sleep tonight if you want to keep her OK. I would put a pot of coffee on and keep it going all night.
However, if she's vomiting up the water....then you do have an emergency, and in that case you will need definitely to take her to the emergency clinic, by one means or another -maybe call a neighbour to help you drive her there, or something. Because it is a real possibility she may not survive without IV fluids.
I wish you well, and hope she will be OK. Like I said, if she keeps the water down, you have a good fighting chance of stabilizing her. Then if she still isn't well Monday, take her to your regular vet.
