My dogs nail.....

My dog was playing outside and when he came in, I noticed he split his toenail! If you look at it from the side of his paw, it's split above his quick. So there was no bleeding. He got a whole bunch of dirt stuck in it. So I cut the top of it off, (it was going to come off anyway) and I soaked it to get as much dirt out I could. Now it just looks bruised and he is licking it a little. I was wondering if there was anything else I could do, the vet doesn't have an appt until Thursday and I don't think it's an emergency so I don't want to take him to the er for dogs! Is a mix of water and peroxide okay to use as a cleaning agent??? Thanks!

I am thinking that because there was no blood, o broken quick, it won't get infected as easy too. My other dog ripped his nail off before too and it was squirting, I had to get him to the vet because it was infected. This time, I think it's not too big of a deal. I just had to get an opinion from someone else. Thank you so much.

I had the same thing happen to one of my dogs years ago.  Scared the cra* out of us because he came in the house spraying blood all over the place.  :-D   Apparently the nail got caught on something outside and he about ripped the whole thing out, nail bed and all.  We did the same thing you did - just cleaned up as much as possible and stopped the bleeding with styptic powder.  The vet said it was nothing to worry about - just keep it clean.  The nail eventually grew back, but a bit cockeyed!
