My four year old Chiahuahua/Pug mix has mass

Rusty my four year old chia/pug mix presented with a mass on his right rear leg right at the bend of the joint. I took him in but they are saying $450-850 to do surgery. I ask about fine needle biopsy and they said it wouldn't tell the hole picture but can I insist that they do this? I can't afford the high end quote as my car just went out too! He is happy, healthly, eating, etc. Going for a second opinion tomorrow too. Any other suggestions from those with similar problem?

HI Breezy.....Good Lord! That quote is ridiculous!!!! How large is this mass in size???? Yes, you can insist on a fine needle aspirate! They draw cells out to to look for any malignant ones or bacteria, etc......Your Vet SHOULD NOT be yelling immediate surgery without knowing what it is....

There are many lumps, bumps, warts and cysts that are benign and do not need surgery. In such a young dog and the location you describe, this is probably a Benign Histiocytoma.

Yes, I'd want to make sure, but your Vet should be able to look at it and tell you! Histiocytomas are normally a result of a weakened immune system....They go away on their own in 2-3 months! Has something happened lately that has caused him any stress? That's usually what triggers these......Vaccines recently will do it,too.....Make sure your feeding a high quality food to help his immune system.....If you aren't aware of what your putting in his mouth, start studying now while he's young...

Is this a large scale Vet Clinic (With many Vets) you use or a private practice? A Large clinic has a system to make as much per client that they can.....Kinda like working on commission! They jump over all the small stuff that should be done first, and go straight to the big stuff that costs ALOT of money!! Sad, but true! Wanting to do immediate surgery is a red flag to me! And again, I think the price they quoted you a joke!!!

You need to call around and get some prices (From other Vets) for a fine needle aspirate AND Pathology report combined.....Remember, they work for you!! You can ask them to do ANYTHING you want! Not the other way around...Good luck and let us know....Karla

Yes anything to know yet? We're all a little worried. My little Chi/Pom mix got a huge lump in her leg too turns out it was just a reaction to  her last shot my vet didn't even wanna biopsy it she told me all get get bumps and cysts all the time and unless it's showing signs of being very painful or causing difficulty walking then best to just leave it alone. After about a month it went away. I think your vet should be flogged caring more about the bottom line then the care of the animal. My vet didn't even charge me for the visit, I think you should start looking around for a new vet. Try the nearest dog park no better then other pet owners to find the best vet.
