I'm sorry, LIVE, that you lost your dear heart, loss of a dog is very hard to handle. I do NOT agree with the post that suggests it was something you did, altho I know they were just trying to help.
I think what the vets said tells you the basics of what it might be. I think an enlarged heart will kill a little dog in no time. Also, a fever suggests an infection, altho it got better, but that will take down a dog very fast. So, your dog wasn't eating very well, pointing to the poss infection, and the enlarged heart, when you put them together, you got a sick dog that probably began some time ago.
One other minor thing, it's been really hot lately, but as long as you feed your dog the same all the time and keep her well-hydrated, and if not indoors then in the shade, then that wouldn't cause a problem.
Get you a new dog as soon as you are ready for it, some need one immediately, others like me need to wait awhile to grieve. Bless you, hon, and bless your little dog's heart and soul. If you like, let us know what your new dog is like, and also any thoughts you decided on as to what may have happened to your pup. Thank you for sharing! We all love dogs. GG
So sorry to read this and know you must be devastated. It certainly does not sound like anything you did and took immediate action to get your dog the care it needed! Unfortunately, sometimes there are just no clear cut answers and we have to live with that. There are those of us here that have lost our beloved pets unexpectedly, myself included. It certainly could have been some genetic issue going on.
We have to learn to cherish the time we had.
Hugs to you.
I understand your pain, my wife of many years and I had to put our Westie down last December 3. He had a tumor rupture in his intestine. That was the diagnosis of the vet and the critical care vet at the emergency hospital. Then I lost my wife on March 3, she had been battling cancer herself.
Not trying to "one up you" but should add some emphasis to my sense of your sorrow. Very sorry and if you it is likely best you soon look for a new dog many rescue dogs I work with as a volunteer are Chihuahua, in fact I have one in my care now - see pictures of Jasper. He's big, about 12 pounds and only part Chihuahua, I'd guess at least 3/4 Chihuahua.... he is a true "heart fur kid".
You mention table scraps (or manybe just food set aside in the plate, I'm gulty of that myself), there was no sign of anything stuck in the dogs throat I assume for what you have provided. That being the case, hope so, you didn't do anything wrong.. do take on a guilt hit.
Please, consider a rescue dog when you are ready, I assume there is something similar to what we have in the USA in your country.
Wish you a fast rebound to being a happy dog owner.
