Meant to ask too did the Vet check the dog's BP? If it is high, or as a precautionary measure, often BP meds are given to help keep the pressure down in the kidneys.
Our dog is on low dose Enalipril right now.
So sorry. That's young have kidney failure. I'm dealing with that right now in our 12 year old Greyhound. I was advised to feed Wellness, Eagle Holistic, Taste of the Wild, etc. Seem high in protein but good foods.Used canned of the same brand. You have to make sure it is a low phosphorus diet. Preferably below .8 or .9% I believe. Due to the kidney failure, the dog may have an upset stomach. I think there is an Iams Early Stage renal food.
At the beginning stage the best thing to feed are proteins that are at the top of the bio-availability chart, such as fish and eggs. These will put the least amount of strain on the kidneys. Mix these with sticky rice to bring the Phos content down further, while keeping the calorie count up. I'm feeding Natural Balance Fish and Sweetpotato.
You can give probably 10 mg of Pepcid twice a day. I give our Grey 20 mg twice a day. You give this about 30 mins before a meal. I put the pills in half a pill pocket. Of course, you should clear all this with your Vet.
How is the dog's BP? Hasn't your Vet discussed this with you. Kidney stuff can be very confusing and complicated to manage. Sometimes Vit B and Calcium needed to be added also.
