Over zealous male spaniel

I have just aquired and 2yr old female spinger spaniel as a companion for my 2yr old male springer. On meeting they bonded immediatelt to the point where the male will not stop mounting the submissive female. I have had to put the female into a cage for some peace and quiet.It was our intention to have her spayed in Feb/March but if the male continues to react to her presence like this it may have to be him. Any suggestions?

Mounting behaviour isn't always a sex-thing, many times it's a dominance thing....on the other hand, what's going on here could well be just a sex-thing. An unspayed female gives off pheromones, and exquisite scents as far as male dogs are concerned! Even if the male has been neutered, quite often (though there are different degrees of interest. Some feel it more than others.)
Of course, if your male dog has NOT been neutered, then it's going to be 10 times more interesting for him.
I do believe this will cease when she is spayed, or maybe a short time afterwards. Perhaps not immediately.
If he hasn't been neutered, then I'd book him in for it a.s.a.p. Afterwards life may be a lot more peaceful....?
