Overprescribing antifungals and antibiotics

by nic_hay, Jan 28, 2009 03:44PM
Hello,

A week and a half ago I took my dog to the vet because she had been having wet (and sometimes mucous-covered) stools.  The vet gave her an antibiotic, an antifungal, and her yearly deworming pill.

Within a few days (perhaps by coincidence), I noticed her female parts were red and swollen on one side.  I watched it over the next few days and it seemed to get slightly worse.  I brought her back to the vet today and he told me she had either a bacterial OR fungal infection (duh) and again, gave her medication for both.

I am wondering if this is standard treatment for dogs because I know if I were prescribed so many different medications, I would probably have some sort of adverse reaction. Does anyone have any advice on or experience with this?

Did the problem with her mucussy stools get better for those few days she was on anti-biotics/anti-fungals? Did the treatment make any difference to that problem at all? Has that symptom cleared up now? or is it still on-going?
It is indeed strange that if she is still on the medication for fungus infection or just had treatment, she could need it again. The only thing I can imagine is it didn't work properly, and she needs a different antibiotic/antifungal (of which there are different ones to try) or a stronger combination of the same meds, and the vet didn't communicate properly with you about this? I would ask the vet about this, to be clear.
A point worth considering is that some foods can cause mucus-coated stools. Particularly certain 'human' foods, and things containing sugar (which they shouldn't have anyway, but can snaffle sometimes when your back is turned!) Some dogs are affected more than others by this. Another possibility is food containing liver, which many dogs cannot tolerate. Even some regular dog food, if she is sensitive, may cause her digestion to rebel.
Her reddened and swollen vaginal area (on one side) might be caused by some urinary problem, or irritation of the vaginal area by the urine in some way. Unless of course it is caused as a natural thing by her 'heat' or 'season'? (I guess you would have mentioned this if it were the case)
Now, I'm just throwing in some suggestions here. There will be other people here who know a lot more, and maybe be able to give you better help.
