Please help me with doseage question
My twenty pound dog, Rusty has had real flea problems already this year I thought. However he is still itching all the time so now I'm thinking its his food! He eats Beneful which has pictures of veggies on the front including corn. I don't think that's a good thing. I need to see if he is allergic to it so I want to try some Benedryl today and if that makes a differece I'm going to take him off that food. If anyone can suggest a good natural food for him I sure would appreciate it. Now the most important question, these Benedryl are 25ml I have a pill splitter, how much should I give him, a quarter, an eighth?? Thank you! He is two years old and twenty lbs.
I took my husky to the vet today for the same issue. they suggested that i try different food, and make her treats with omega 3 or buy her some omega 3 for dogs and give it to her. she said it is an important fatty acid that most dogs foods lack and that it can do amazing things for skin allergies
I don't know about corn being a problem but I do know that too much meat (Protein) in a dog's diet can cause this excessive itching. One needs to ensure that a edog gets a really balanced diet to avoid all these nasty things.

Hey! don't beat yourself up over this! You weren't to know. That's one of the great things about this Community, learning new stuff as we go along.
Years ago, when Misty was about 4 or 5 I used to buy her Pedigree and Bakers Complete. I actually thought all the orange and green tasty-looking kibble in there really was FULL of lovely carrots and peas, and the "country chicken" really was juicy tasty healthy country chicken!! (hope I don't get sued for slander).....
Never mind, a couple of years later (poor doggy!) I learned things about dog food, and bought her something healthy and good.
We can only know what we have learned up to today.

Thanks alot and this food is going bye-bye tonight, I'm shocked by how much bebedryl they can handle. I'm going to try and find misfits4me right now. I feel terrible for not doing more research for my baby's food! Of course its the food! As for the vets happily helping, they told me they could do anything without seeing him first. I said you know its very unfortunate that all you people care about is money. Thanks again.
You need to contact your veterinarian for any dosage information. That is something that I really cannot give you over an online forum.
There is something you should know, however, and that is that Beneful is probably THE worst food that you can feed a dog with any kind of allergies. The number one ingredient on the list for this food is CORN! Corn, along with wheat and other grains, are the most common source of food allergies in dogs. The makers of this food try to convince people that it's a good, healthy food by putting these pics of veggies all over the bag but all it amounts to is that it's nothing more than doggie junk food with little actual nutritional value. If you Google it you will find many sites that will probably surprise you considering the way the television commercials tout this food as "healthy". Nothing could be further from the truth.
You want to look for a food that has meat as a first ingredient, and since your dog has allergies, try to stay away from any type of poultry as that is also a common allergen. Try to find one that is made from, say, fish and sweet potato or venison. Lamb is also good, but with food allergies try to stay away from lamb and rice since rice is a grain. As far as manufacturers go, Royal Canin makes a good food and many people have been switching their dogs over to Blue Buffalo. If you Google "premium dog foods" you'll come up with enough reading material to give you a lot to choose from once you read their analyses.
Getting back to the Benadryl, though, if you just give your vet's office a quick call, however, they will happily advise you on the dosage.

Benadryl dosage for dogs is 1mg per pound body weight. And the dosage is every 8 hours. So if Rusty is 20lbs he can have 20mg every 8 hours. I wouldn't give it to him constantly though. It's fine for short periods, but can cause liver damage if used for long periods of time.
I'd throw out the Beneful, I don't think it's any way near top of the dog food list. The problem with the not-so-good pet foods is they have juicy, tasty, healthy looking presentation and packaging. That's just advertising and what's inside is a different story! So don't be fooled by the packaging!
