Potty training NOT a puppy

How do I potty train a four year old dog? I bought a crate for him, but he cries in it all night.

I saw this the other day but due to my own *dog* issues here lately, haven't had much time to check these boards.
Is this your dog you've had since it was a puppy or a new adult you have brought into your home?  Good you bought him a crate. I am a believer that all dogs should be crate trained.  Are you at home all day with the dog or is the dog alone for periods of time?  If you are still checking the boards, please give m ore info.  I will say, that even though he is crying at night, assuming he is safe and can't hurt himself, has been fed and does not need to relieve  himself, let him whine and ignore him.  If you start going to him or letting him out, he will have you trained in no time.
