Puppy Chi Concussion...SO WORRIED!

Puppy Chi Concussion...SO WORRIED!

I'm worried about my 5 month old chihuahua. Thursday morning, my husband was holding her and she squirmed and fell out of his hands. After that, she became very stiff and didn't really move. My husband had to leave for a doctor's appointment and thought she would get better if she was left alone. When he got home from the doctor a few hours later, she was still in the same lethargic state. He took her to the vet and the vet told him she had a concussion. They hooked her up to an IV and gave her meds. The vet wanted her to stay over night to keep an eye on her.

I'm starting to get very worried. It's now Saturday, so it's been three days that she's been at the vet hooked up to an IV. She's gotten only a little bit better but is still lethargic. She was able to stand up and eat this morning. The vet said that all dogs don't handle concussions the same and that there wasn't much to do but wait.

How long is too long for a puppy to be in this state with a concussion? When will it be too late for her to come out of it okay?

I would trust what the vet has told you. They are monitoring her quite carefully I am sure. It sounds like it. She already has made some slight improvement, and that is good. It's true that concussions vary, as do recoveries from concussions. I know it's that way with humans....and although I am not precisely sure how dogs handle this, it sounds as though your vet may be right.
You could ask about an MRI scan...? Although it may not make much difference to the treatment at this stage. There will be swelling and bruising to the brain, and this will most likely heal naturally, in its own time, so long as a very close eye is kept on her for any back-sliding or sudden changes.
Maybe you are going to have to trust what they are doing for her, and wait to see how she comes out of it. It would be good to see a little more improvement, I know. I hope there is, soon.
