Puppy Diarrhea

I have a 12 week old Black Lab.  He has diarrhea.  I gave him some pepto bismol and he ended up vommiting huge piles.  The next day he had the diarrhea again.  He is not eating anything differently I give him Pedigree dry food.  I gave him some dry toast to help his tummy.  He gets a fish oil tablet a day for dry skin (per the vet).  What else can I do since this is the second bout of diarrhea in two weeks.  It is here for a day and gone the next.

It may be the fish oil capsules.  I never could take that stuff, as it gave me D too.  :-)  Check with your vet for an alternative supplement for the dry skin and see if that might help.

Having such a young pup afflicted with severe diarrhea and vomiting can be dangerous.  They can become dehydrated very quickly and that is a medical emergency in one so small and young.  Is he still drinking OK and at least holding down water when he gets sick?  One thing you can do for a dog with tummy issues is to feed plain cooked white rice - no butter or salt.  Usually dogs can keep that down and it helps tighten up the bowels.  Plain oatmeal or cottage cheese are other things to try as well.  If he keeps that down for 24 hours, add some canned white chicken meat to the rice and see how that goes for the next day.  Once he can tolerate that, move back into his normal diet.

Dogs can also take pepcid for upset tummies, so check with your vet about dosage and timing.  Tums are also an acceptable alternative to Pepto.   What you describe doesn't sound like a disease to me (but I'm no vet!) and that's why I suspect the fish oil capsules.  Any kind of oil is going to loosen the bowels, so take him off them for a couple weeks and see what happens.
