Sedating a Blind Dog For Grooming

Sedating a Blind Dog For Grooming

My dog groomer, who I have had since I got my Bichone Frise (rescue) 3 years ago, has told me she cannot groom him now he has gone blind as he will not co-operate.  He never was easy!!  She said I should sedate him before he goes next time.  I am worried about this.

Should I find a new groomer?  Should I sedate him?  He has only recently gone blind with PRA and is having trouble adjusting.

A Bichone needs regular grooming, otherwise I would not bother.  I take him every 8 weeks.

Hello...I too, have a Bichon (Rescued from a Puppy Mill) that is terrified of ALL human contact (Including me!). He always has had to be sedated to be groomed....There is no way around it...
His Vet prescribed a medication called "Acepromazine" at a very small dose....It DOES NOT knock him out, but calms him enough to be handled. She (His Vet) explained that (On this medication), he is basically still scared, but cannot react to the fear. Whatever that means!
It wears off in about 4-6 hrs. and he's fine.  I agree, I would rather not have to do it, either. Bottom line: He has to be groomed!
There are probably other meds. that work the same way....You'll have to talk to your Vet......Good luck & keep us posted.....Your Bichon is Darling!   Karla
