Shih-tzu vomiting bile in the morning?

I have a 10 year old Shih-tzu, Copper, who constantly vomits yellow bile in the morning. We feed him 3 times a day, early morning, noon and at 6:30 pm, everyday. We make his food with Dr. Pitcarin's Book: The Complete Guide to Natural Health in Dogs and Cats, and he still vomits every morning. We have been using these recipes for about 3 years. We also have a 5 year old Shih-tzu/Jack Russell mix who is very dominant. So we are thinking maybe it is stress related as well? But we have had her for 5 years now. We realize that Shih-tzu's are very sensitive especially in the tummy area. We have tried fasting him for 24 hours, Manuka Honey, feeding him once a day, treats right before bedtime. I have been on an infinite number of forums and nothing is working. He smells so bad because of the constant vomiting and he is making our house smell rancid (people notice when they come in, very embarrassing.) My father has said that if we don't find anything that works by Nov. 30th 2010, that Copper will be put down on that date. And he is only 10! He is completely healthy otherwise and should not have to be put down as such an early age. Please please please help. You would literally be saving his life. Thank you!

One of my Pit Bulls has a very sensitive stomach and she would do this too, in spite of being fed small, frequent meals.  1 Pepcid AC at night pretty much cured the problem.  Ask your vet first and to get the correct dosage since your dog is much smaller.  My 60lb Pumpkin gets one regular strength Pepcid each morning and each evening.
Good Luck!

Thank you for posting that reasonable, common sense answer. So many people like to be alarmists and urge everyone to rush their dogs to the vet for every little thing , when often, that just creates more stress...especially with Lhasas and ShihTzus.
We all worry and sometimes when looking up these problems, we're just looking for some reassurance and for someone to tell us, " it 's normal, this too shall pass".

I have a 12 week old sitzu maltese mix . he chocked on a piece of hot dog my son droped on the floor. 2 days later he was a mess vomiting 4 times and sore tummy. I have had X-rays and the vet said we just need to wait for the hot dog to pass. BUT in the mean time i have to hand feed him food and water and carry him to puppy pads as his hind end is limp and he cries and yelps if he moves or i pick him up!! I'm so worried. his stomach is very hard.
The vet said nothing about a slipped disk being possible or pancreatic problems like Im reading now in researching this. should I get a 2nd opinion ?
we love him and he is so sad and in pain… please help..

HI,

My little shih tzu is a beautiful 18 year old love and she is on her last legs. Lindsey has kidney disease and her enzymes are double what they w here two weeks ago. My vet does not believe in keeping a dog alive if they are in pain. She is a very honest person and a very compassionate person as well...I am lucky to have her in my life. However, please check with your vet, because it may be something off in her system. We are trying to keep her going until my husband can get home in 1 week. It is going to be hard to say goodbye because Lindsey has been such a wonderful little baby to us, but she had a fabulous life and everyone loved her. They are such a hearty and sturdy little breed and they have such HEART!!! I will be praying for yours! May she be in your life for a very, very long time! God Bless...

pep is a great med and works well, try it and yogurt before bed helps mine or cottage cheese ,it coats tummy and there tummy not empty all night.

plz let us know how it goes and before you put a healthy baby down give him to a good home that will understand and love him.

Yes, same here with my 9 yr old shihtzu .. our vet will allow some PepcidAC and it makes a huge difference. Also, a tad of food before bedtime to help keep food in his stomach helps as long as not too much to want to go out for a walk in the middle of the night! The only problem is that the chewable Pepcid is now off the shelves in the US for awhile due to some type of regulation ... (sigh)

To answer your question simply:
Because you have a Shih Tzu.

Sounds to me like you have a normal Shih Tzu. All three of my families Shih Tzu act the same; they sleep for 99% of the day and when they play they sprint around the house at the speed of light, for about 20 minutes then it is back to sleep. My wife thinks the dog is depressed, but that is just how Shih Tzu are. They are very low energy dogs.

As for the puking, that is also pretty normal. Shih Tzu have very sensitive stomachs. My dog pukes often in the morning, usually once a week. Sometimes your dog may not eat enough one night and the next morning it will throw up yellow or white foam. Then they will also puke if they eat too much, it is a delicate balance. Allergies can also be the cause. Allergies are another thing that they are sensitive towards, when my allergies act up, I take a Claritin before bed, and the dog gets half a Benadryl tablet (about 10mg).

One last thing, Shih Tzu are, again, sensitive dogs. This time I am talking of their feelings. If you leave, no matter how long or short of a time, it gets so worked up when you come home that sometimes they will puke.

It seems that a Shih Tzu's natural reaction to everything is puking. I am not advising you avoid the vet; if you feel that you need to take your dog, do it. I am just letting you know I went one time and the vet gave my dog some pills; well after $300 for the visit and the pills, the dog puked about 8 days instead of 7, the same (if not better) result occurred with the benadryl.

I hope this will calm some people's worries about Shih Tzu and throwing up. It is something they do. What seems like a lot of puking for us isn't a lot for Shih Tzu.

Again, every dog is different, so take your dog to the vet if you are unsure.

Poor little guy's on Death Row just because he has an upset tummy?

All the above suggestions sound good to me. His diet may be a bit too rich for him. The boiled chicken and rice diet is so very gentle on the stomach, and is worth trying.
But I do believe you should take him to the vet, because there could be something behind all this vomiting. He could have gall bladder problems, or chronic pancreatitis, or something else going on. The best thing is to find out if everything inside is working as it should. A simple blood test should show if anything is elevated or out of balance.

Your size dog can take 1/2 tablet Pepcid (10 mg.) twice a day....Start with the night dose and see what happens....I'm gonna keep my comments to your father, to myself!    Karla

P.S. Baking Soda Water will take the smell away, also....Wash around his mouth & face with it....It will neutralize the odor.....

It could be food related ?? it might be a good idea if you changed his diet to something that is gentler on his tummy as he is a family pet not a dog in the wild.
Try chicken and brown rice. Also try charcoal tablets from a health food store that should get rid of the smell and help the tummy too.
I notice you are 21 yrs and as such able to make your own decisions.I find it very unfair that your father should place a death sentence on your poor little guy.

What you can do is keep the fur around his mouth clean and washed.Where he has been sick finish off with white vinegar that should neutralise it ....ok your home might smell like fish an chips for a short while but better than that musty sick smell.

Leahdeebee is right an antacid will help, when my Clumber is sick  I give her some of my antacid boy does she hate it but it does the trick.

Just remember the more diligent you are about keeping everything clean the better, its up to you. There is no easy fix but there is plenty of ways to stop that smell.
Let us know how you and your little guy are progressing.
