Shoud we get the vet to put our dog to sleep.

Our Jack Russell is about 15, or 16 years old.  He has been wetting for about a year and recently soiled twice. I suppose its time for the vet.  He has a bad heart, artritis and slow growing cancer.  My children had them all this time - is it better to tell the children he is been put down or better to saw went to the vet and he recommended that he be put down asap. Thanks Liz.

From what I have been reading regarding this topic lately. It really depends on the childrens ages. I think when the time comes for me to have to do the same with my dog. I rather just do it and let my 11 year old know after the fact. Me being an adult I can't imagine the day my house will be one dog less. Good Luck and Best Wishes

I was 27 when we had to put our 10 year old bassett to sleep due to cancer.  It was hard on me then, so I can imagine how hard it would be on a child.  I did not go to the vet when he was put to sleep.  I said my goodbyes before he went to the vet.  He stayed at the vet about a week running last minute tests to make sure this was our only option.  I wanted to make sure someone was there at the vet with him to hold him and let him know that it was going to be okay and my mom and dad was there with him.  Then when it was over they brought him home and buried him in their back yard.  I say the same as the earlier poster, tell them it's a possibility and have them say goodbye then...don't take them.  You can go and cry like a baby and not have to worry about being strong for your children there.  It's so hearbreaking to lose a pet, especially when you have to put them to sleep, because I had my "what ifs"...but in the end you know what you have to do.

Hi there

I am very very sorry.

It is very hard.
I took my 10 year old to say goodbye to our very sick and dying cat.  Big mistake, she wouldnt let go of the cage.  It was heartbreaking.  She wouldnt leave that cat there at the Vets.  It upset her very deeply.  It broke her heart.

I would advise telling them it is a possibility, so they say goodbye at the home 'in case the vet says to put the dog down'.

Then go to the Vet without them.  It will be hard for you as well.

Sorry
