Sick vizsla

Hi, my parents 4 year old vizsla has been very sick for the last month with low wbc counts. Specifically her neutrophil counts. She also has low platlets. They tested her bone marrow which is producing wbc but somthing appears to be attacking it once they are released. They also did a full nody scan and no cancer was found. The vet has placed her on a high dosage of steroids, which increased her wbc to somewhat normal ranges. The vet cannot identify why she is all of a sudden getting sick when she has been healthy for the last 4 years. She has tested negative for Lyme, has all of her shots and vacinationss on time, takes heart worm and flea/tic meds regularly. My parents are concerned about keeping her on  steroids. Do you know what further tests can be done to determine what's attacking her?

Thanks
