(snicker snicker.... ) Be glad he took off. You would have been faced with severe JRT flatulence in short order!
Well....maybe I exaggerate a little....that journey to the kitchen could have been 15 or 20 seconds! LOL
But that fat-bellied JRT was in severe danger of being put in the pot itself by me that night as I was so darn hungry, and there was my dinner -snaffled by a sneaky thief! I think that's why it ran away into the night!
I shouldn't be enjoying these stories as much as I am, but I love hearing about the mischief dogs can get into. Thanks for sharing these stories and for the reminder to protect our dogs from dangerous human foods.
Here's a health page that covers common toxic foods for dogs. Feel free to add to and edit it.

A JACK RUSSELL ate 15 sausages in 10 seconds??!!! ROFL! He must have LOOKED like a sausage after all that! Oh Lord - my gut hurts from laughing!
Our first dog, Travis, taught us exactly what theiving little minds dogs have when it comes to food temptation. We had just moved into our house and taken delivery of a large pan pizza when a friend came over. We left the pizza in the box on the coffee table as we showed our friend around. On returning to the living room, the box was gone. Hiding in the corner behind the couch was Travis, neatly opened box in front of him and the last piece of pizza dangling from his jaws. We stared at each other in shocked silence for a few seconds until Travis decided to get rid of the evidence. He swallowed that last piece whole in one scarf. What can you do BUT laugh?! From then on our friend always asked about "that pizza-eatin' dog of yours." LOL!
Oh yes! I remember the day I went to a friend's house for dinner. He had cooked sausages, and put a big plate of them on the table while I went in the kitchen for the potatoes (a round journey of about 10 seconds) When I came in -no sausages! Not even one. I found one in the end by the dog-door. Their greedy Jack Russell had snaffled about 15 sausages off that plate in 10 seconds, and run away into the night!
Believe me, it can happen.
Beware Christmas puddings, too, anything with raisins or dried fruit. Chocolate (obviously) is poisonous....so none of that. Nothing at all with any alcohol in it....in fact, the safest thing is no Human Food at all. Begging at table can be a will-destroying thing for guests and visiting family too, (I know. My mother used to slip treats off her plate under the table for my dog, even though I asked her not to!) so if you haven't managed to train your dog not to beg at the table yet....it's best he goes into another room while Christmas dinner is eaten.
