VET IS 2 HOURS AWAY......HAVE NO OTHER PLACE TO ASK!!!

My husband put out rat poison 3 weeks ago and since yesterday evening my dog has displayed some odd symptoms...... bloody diarreah, not eating, and just plain out sleeping all day......i know she couldn't have gotten to the poison itself, but would eating a poisoned rat cause these symptoms???

Great!  that is fantastic! you have two toddlers there! to keep you busy

I watched your story and I am glad it had a happy ending.

Get rid of the rat poison anyway.  Because my mother in law used a chemical to kill nettles one field away from my house and by my dog touching off the nettles it somehow got on my toddler and she swelled up so much that i couldnt see her eyes/i thought she would die her reaction was severe.

I think it is better with toddlers (including the four legged type) to avoid all chemicals toxins etc. in or near the house,  they are deadly.

That's great news! It sounds as if she maybe ate something she shouldn't have. Like I said, my dog got those symptoms once, from eating chocolate. She recovered fine and it didn't hurt her, long-term.

we let out to run around today while you where grilling our easter dinner and i was so amazed at how she improved since last night....she was runnin' around playin' with the kids, eating and of course leaving the awfullest piles of you know what everywhere...lol...i am so happy that i didn't have to take her to the vet, the diarreah is gone, she's eating and drinking, and just her old self again....yes at first the thought of her getting into any kind of poison scared the c r a p out of me because she has been with us since my son was born (she's only 2 weeks older than him) i am still gonna keep a close eye on her though in case whatever she had was on the back burner!!!!!! thanks for all the help dog lovers!!!!!

I would like to say sorry too. I gave you a bit of a knee-jerk reaction before. I've been thinking about that all day, but this is the first chance to get to my laptop!

I was a bit cynical at first when I answered, but couldn't see your particular situation. You were trying to do the best for your dog, but hampered by some problems. But I just assumed things that weren't so, in your case.

It's good news that your dog is improving. Hope that continues, and hope she's just fine, in a little while.

I'd just like to mention (not to you, but to anyone else who might read this thread) that rat poison is SO dangerous for domestic animals, and wildlife. Eating a poisoned rat or mouse, or even only a part of one, can be fatal. Yet many people don't think of that. Many farmers continue to use rat poison, as far as I know.
I had a problem with rats once. When they started to try to come in the house, I was concerned, obviously about disease, but also that they might chew through electric wiring once indoors, I shot them, because I could not bear to think of any scavengers that might eat their poisoned carcasses, or my dog who might get hold of one. And I could not bear to think of what the poison does to the poor rats themselves

I am glad to hear that your dog is doing better. I also want to say that I did think you had a situation where you could not get to the Vet on your own, ie the car issue.

Please understand that as Ghilly said we are all very passionate about out our dogs and some of us tend to get emotional when we know that there is one in need.

When you posted initially and then a second time you neglected to tell us that this has happened before when your dog was in heat. You should try to remember to do mention things like this so that we can better assist you and nobody will be quick to pass judgement on you.

There ar so many things that can cause bloody stools, some very serious and some not so serious. The mention of the rat poison really set the wheels in motion here.

Again, I am glad your dog is doing better and I apologize if I may have offended you in any way.

Please keep us posted.

well, for one thing when u have a 3 year old at home and only one vehicle and your husband uses for work then it's kinda hard to do things right away!!! i found an animal clinic(shelter) about 30 minutes away and they told me to keep an eye on her and try to give her some pedialite for the diarrhea and give her a baby aspirin for the pain! they were closed when my husband got home, so i couldn't take her yesterday! so far so good, though her gums are still pink, teeth look okay and she has started drinking more liquids already (mainly the pedialite-she seems to favor it) about the chocolate there are plenty of kids around here that have offered to give her there chocolate or candy plenty of times and i have caught them, so it maybe that as well.........she was jumping around a lil yesterday evening and we decided to bring her into an enclosed room on our porch to keep an eye on her better.....i have noticed she is in heat as well....and the guy we bought her from (family friend) told us that it could be were this is really the first time she has gone in heat ( i posted about a 6 months to a year ago...about the same thing almost and it cleared up in 2 days) so im hoping that it is just a lil bug like last time......the animal clinic is closed today because of easter and they dont have an emergency after hours because it's a small business but like i said she's acting better and hopefully she does get better...thanks to those of you who really listened to my post and gave the positive feed back.......i will update if she either gets better or worse...thanks again for all your advice!!!!!!

I know that we all get emotional during situations such as this, but yelling at the poster and questioning their ability as a parent isn't going to help the situation.  Try to convey the urgency of the situation without berating the person.  Not everyone is as tuned in to their animals as most of is are, and if we treat the person cruelly, she will be less likely to post again, which isn't going to help the dog at all.

If the dog has been displaying symptoms for 24 hours, in all likelihood there's not much that can be done if the dog did, indeed, ingest rat poison.  Supportive treatment should be started IMMEDIATELY upon the realization that the animal could have gotten into poison.  A series of Vitamin K injections are necessary since the rat poison will thin the blood to the point that the dog will bleed out, and the vitamin K helps to prevent that.

To the poster who originated this thread - would you please update us as to what is going on?

Ghilly

There are other causes also for bloody diarrhoea. My dog had that when she got into some chocolate once. She was quite ill, although didn't vomit, lethargic and pooping mucussy, bloody gunk, but was fine after fasting with just water 24 hours, as the vet recommended, then feeding her fish and rice for 2 days.

It may be caused by eating a poisoned rat, or it may be caused by something else your dog has eaten? Can you recall...did he eat anything unusual?

By the time she posted back to Jaybay she could have been there and back already. I don't think it matters how many of us tell her to take the dog to the Vet.

I told her to get to the Vet 1 hour after she posted or to at least call the Vet. She talked to a neighbor that works for Fish and Game, she should have gotten more assistance from him than just a phone number to who knows who. I can't believe the dog is 3 years old and doesn't have a regular Vet.

I know some people don't have the means, but if that is the case there are other alternatives as Jaybay pointed out.

The dog has already been displaying symptoms for 24 hrs.

It is a real shame!

That's why I always used to shoot them instead............

By the way, 2 hours is zilch. I take my dog regularly for 2 hour walks. By the way that time passes very quickly when you are doing something worthwhile.  Unless the roads are blocked by snow or flood,....driving 2 hours is well worth it to save your dog.

Since this post is 8 hours old, I'm assuming that you have been to the vet already, since the vet was only 2 hours away.

Any dog with bloody diarrhea and the other symptoms you describe must be seen right away.  I'm a Dobe owner, too.  These wonderful dogs are so devoted, I can't imagine not taking my dogs to the vet when its needed, no matter how far away it is.

I hope by now you've been to the vet and have some answers.

How awful!  But now is not the time to worry about pressing charges.  You need a firm diagnosis before even considering whether the illness is unnatural, and if so, who did what to cause it.  Right now I'm terribly concerned that your dog may be slowly dying with nothing to ease the pain and suffering.

While our natural inclination is to want to see a dog eating - it gives us hope - you don't want to put additional stress on a bleeding GI tract.  Digestion forces the body to send more blood to the digestive organs, so if they're already bleeding, digestion will speed up blood loss.  Keeping her hydrated will help to keep blood plasma levels up.  Adding about 1 part honey to 4 parts water can help keep electrolyte levels balanced if your dog won't try gatorade or pedialyte - or you don't have any on hand.  Sometimes offering these things in the form of frozen chips proves more interesting to the dog as well.

Keep on trying to get a professional to help you.  If it means staying on hold for an hour, then so be it.  Are there any other animal rescue groups in your area?  Maybe try a Google search and see what pops us.  And keep us posted!

tanks for your responses......my neighbor works for fish and wildlife and he gave me a number to call, unfortunately i keep getting put on hold....i fed her a few hours ago and she ate a bite and drank a lil water...but no vomiting that i have seen.......there has been a problem before with someone poisoning animals (they still live around here) my dog is a 3 year old dobbie and is also registered with akc.....couldn't i press charges if in fact he poisoned her and something happened to her (death/damage)????

The one thing you CAN'T do is nothing.  At least call your vet for advice and get ready to drive.  Other resources for vet care are animal shelters.  Let your fingers do the walking through the Yellow Pages - online or hard copy - and see what's available.  Even your local law enforcement agency may be of help in finding vet care closer to your location.

If your dog is still eating, stop feeding to allow the gut to calm down.  Do keep up fluids and if you can get some pedialyte or even gatorade in, then so much the better.

Your dog needs to go to the Vet if there is bloody diarreaha. There is no question about it.

Poison ingestion can cause these symptoms but I would think there would be vominting also.

Call your Vet and give them a description of the dog's symptoms but I am sure they are going to tell you that the dog needs medical attention if she is not eating and has bloody diarreaha.
