Very sick dog

My dog has been very sick.  His name is Simon Joe and he is 9 years old - Golden Retriever.  Vet determined he has a very bad infection.  His WBC was 24,000, but has come down in the last few days with IV antiobotics and fluids.  He has been tested for everything and had x-ray completed and we still have no answer of what is causing the infection.

Since his WBC levels dropped, the Vet sent him home on Saturday (yesterday). He is on Cephalexin 500 mg 3/day and Predinsome 20 MG 1/day for 5 days and then 1/2 tab every other day until gone.  Today makes his 3rd day on the Predinsome.

He seemed to be getting better on first day home, moving around and going outside to potty.  Late last night and into the 2nd day home my poor dog can't even roll over.  I have been feeding him by a spoon (he is eating well again, 3 cans vet intentsive care food today) and water by a syringe since he can't even hold his head up.  His body was shaking all over.  I tried to listen to his heart, but it seemed to be fluttering so bad.  Tonight he seems calmed down a bit, but still no movement from the dining room floor.

I am so worried about him after I read all the reviews about the side effects.  I wish I would have read this today before I gave him his pill.

I will be calling his vet in the morning to see if we can't cut these pills back to 1/2 tablet every other day.

My question is he is taking the Cephalexin 500 mg 3/day also.  Could this also be making matters worse?

Sincerely,
Donna

So very sad tonight.  We had to take Simon to Vet since he stopped eating, drinking and was in extreme pain.  Vet just called a little while ago stating she thought he had mengitis.  He has a fever of 107 and she is very concerned he won't make it.  She is going at him aggesively with IV meds and shots.  I read articles that ear infections can cause this.  He has always had ear infections but I have always keep it under control with the vet medications.

I don't want to lose him and pray that he will make it through this.  I can't explain how upset I am and the thought of him dying is breaking my heart!

Cephalexin is often used in dogs.  Usual side effects are vomiting and/or diarrhea.  Not sure if the Pred would cause this but you have the added issue of no diagnosis.  You usually see more side effects from long term use.
I just hesitate suggesting anything other than what you are doing, ESP keeping fluids in him.  Of course, if he gets worse, go to the ER.  Either way, I would call the Vet first thing in the morning.

Hiw was the rest of the blood work?  This could be anything from an infection, to autoimmune issues, parasites or cancer.
Hope they can figure this out.
