I just put my 17 year-old dog down on Tuesday. Her health was declining, but Monday afternoon she took a turn for the worse and we knew it was time. When we arrived at our vet's office (the same one we have been going to for the past 5 years), we were informed that we would not be allowed in the room with our dog for the procedure. When I asked why, I was told it was because they "no longer carried the insurance for it". I wanted to run out the door right then and there, but I also didn't want to have my dog in pain while I tried to figure out where else to take her. I had to sit in the waiting room while my best friend died. Ever since then, I have been crushed by the guilt of not being there - I always thought I would be there for her. The more I read about it, the more I realize that their "policy" is not normal - it is actually far from it. Has anyone else ever encountered this kind if policy, or is the vet I have trusted for the past several years doing this to cut costs (ie, sedatives)?
