What causes Pyometra?
Other than being non bred and non spayed, what causes it?
I have had female dogs all my life and have never even heard of Pyometra until last year when my 7 year old mix breed was diagnosed and had to have emergency surgery. Now, I have a 3 year old German Sheppard mix going through the same thing!! Is this so common?

Any chance you are feeding raw food like hamburger or chicken?
Yes, I would be suspicious also.
What I would do is sanitize anything I could with a solution of diluted bleach, or they may have stuff on the market now that are not as harsh but read the labels as to what the solution kills.
Of course, put any animals up. If they have access to hard surfaces outside like patios, walkways, etc, clean with the bleach. Do their bowls on a regular basis also.
When I had a number of dogs years ago, I had two run areas that were covered with pavers. At least once a month, I took buckets of diluted bleach and soaked the surfaces down, let that dry then hosed them off. Crates were also taken apart and washed with bleach, especially after being at dog shows. Same with stainless bowls.
What do you keep your dog food in? If containers, you might want to sanitize those or replace them. Many people will store in containers and dump new food on top if the old. If moisture gets in the containers you can get mold.
You walk the dogs in or around any streams or bodies of water?
Just throwing out some ideas.

Thanks, yes, I am trying to find anything that I can to see what might be happening in this yard or environment to have this happen twice. There has to be something. It's just too strange.
Hormonal changes and structural changes of the uterus, seen more in up spay females. When a dog is in season the cervix is open allowing for the introduction of bacteria. E-Coli is the most common cause. Another good reason to spay.
