What killed my dog?

Our family dog just passed away he was a 9.5 year old Boston Terrier, he had been doing great after our move,
eating well Cesar Dog food devoted to small dog right?
He abruptly stopped eating, and didn't want anything for 6 days he ate very small portions, and increased the amounts he was drinking.
He became very lethargic, collapsing on the hard tile floor. He lay on the reclining chair all day, not getting up at all, every so often he would move to try and get comfortable.
He then fell off the recliner and started taking a bowel movement and urinating while he lay on the floor.
He never did that in the house ever, and the only time he attempted to get up in 12 hours he was trying to get up to go outside.
He was weak, breathing rapidly, severe weight loss, giving him chicken broth and water through a turkey baster.
Within 3 days our dog was in his final hours.
We spent time with him after our children went to bed, he was fading away we put together a comfy bed and tucked him in, I cried up until he took his last breath.
His nose poured out secretions, and his mouth had a thick phlem running down, some foul smell entered the air, and we pulled back the sheet to find there was a lot of blood pouring out his anus. He tightened up his stomach and let everything go, looking into my eyes as I told him it was ok, he was allowed to leave, and I loved him so much the tears continue to pour as it's been only 23 hours since I lost my dog...and I loved him so much.....sooooo much.
Please he was cremated today and there's no way of me finding out what he could have died from.
Rough play from the children? Bad Dog food? The small tumour on his forehead? what killed my 2 week earlier healthy dog...( at 65 years old Dog Years) he had small amount of grey on his chin. He had good eye sight and great hearing. His coat shined and he weighed 25 lbs...within 7 days he stopped eating and ended up dying in our home. :(
His white fur was clean yet YELLOW before he passed away. He looked so sick..he couldn't move his head and his tongue was white, and his gums were cold.
What killed my dog...any suggestions?
I just need to have some type of closure as to what the possibilities are.
Thank you

I'm so sorry about the loss of your dog.  We just lost a pet too - he was 24 yrs old so I really do have some idea of what you're going through.

You said his white hair was yellow.  It might have been related to his liver.  Had he been taking meds?  Some of these meds can cause problems with the liver.

If you have a vet, he/she might be able to give you some ideas about what happened to him.

Again, I'm really sorry to hear about your loss.  He was a family member and I'm sure you and your family gave him a good life.  I have a particular liking for boston terriers because when our cat was euthanized, a boston terrier was waiting for the vet and he came over to me and just jumped on my lap - to his owner's surprise.  I think the dog knew.  This is about you, not me so I'll shut up now.  If you ever want to talk, feel free to send me a PM.
