Why are my dogs nipples leaking blood?

Two weeks ago, I adopted a 2 year old dog who recently had a litter. Her nipples are leaking. Sometimes the fluid is brownish but mostly it's bloody. Why? Should I be concerned?

"Cephalexin Capsules may be used in the treatment of some respiratory infections, urinary tract infections or skin and soft tissue infections such as wounds, abscesses and lacerations in dogs and cats. Cephalexin is commonly given in a dosage of 10-15 mg per lb body weight every 8-12 hours."

You could try that. It shouldn't harm her so long as you get the dosage and frequency of dosage right. And so long as the medicine has been stored properly (cool dark-ish place) and isn't out of date.

It is really important that you find a plan from here on, for any medical care your dog might need. It's obvious you really love your dog, but they are like us, and can need medical help without warning. Some things have to be seen by a vet.
(This really should....but the cephalexin may help. But what would you do if it didn't? Or if there were side effects? Or if she were allergic?)

The nipple leakage might be caused by hormonal upset. Has she been spayed? If not, such things are fairly common and often present as a symptom of "false pregnancy". If she has been spayed, then there might be more of an issue which could need further investigation.
If she is pregnant...you didn't say....then that is a completely different issue. So would it be if she'd just had a litter of pups. AND I am unsure how safe it would be for the pups to give any medicine including an antibiotic, to a nursing mother....All those questions could be answered by a vet you see.

I once compiled a list of financial resources here on Dogs MedHelp for anyone who cannot afford vet's fees. (U.S. list only)

I don't know if everything there is current. I posted that in 2016. But I hope you might find some help there.

She's a pug and both vets estimate her age to be 2 years old.  Her name is Sophie and we all love her so much!!!

The vet kept telling me this morning that the bloody discharge isn't mastitis and that the antibiotic should take care of it.  But like I said, if it's still occuring after she finishes her meds, I plan to take her back in.  I may be over reacting, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I'll keep you posted on her and if I have to take her back.

Later!!

Good Morning Karla,

We just got home from the vet.  The vet said she may have the beginning of a slight infection or a minor cystic problem but it isn't mastitis.  Her gave her an antibiotic injection and 10 days of amoxicillin.  If they're still leaking after 2 weeks, I'll take her back.  He said other than that, she's perfectly healthy.  Great news for our new addition!!! :)

Have a great day!!!

Thanks.  We've noticed this for the past 7 days.  Not sure if it was going on the first week or not.  We were planning to take her in for a full check-up this morning but my husband and I both got called in to work.  I was just researching the web and was reading about mastitis.  Do you think it can wait for me to take her to our vet first thing Monday morning?  Or should I be looking up emergency vet hospitals?  She seems perfectly fine otherwise...great appetite, very playful, sleeping well, etc.

Hello & welcome to the forum......Yes, you need to be very concerned.....Has your girl seen a Vet (For a full evaluation) since you got her?  How long has this been going on?
What your describing probably started as "Mastitis", but has now become much worse......IMO, your girl is in serious trouble.....These types of infections can turn quickly into Toxic Shock & Sepsis....Both of these conditions can be Fatal.......
Please, seek treatment ASAP......The sooner she begins Antibiotics, the less chance of it traveling through the entire bloodstream and causing further damage to her organs.......You must get her some help......Come back with a report & good luck........I'll be thinking about her......Karla
