Ginger is 11 and a half and is a 17 pound Pom who should probably be a 15 pound Pom I'm guessing because she is overweight. It's not because I over feed her I SWEAR! She gets 1/4 cup raw in the morning and 1/4 cup plus another 1/8 of a cup of raw for dinner. She gets an hour to two hours of exercise everyday but not weekends. Her raw food is not high in fat. I've tried all kinda of raw food brands and she still is overweight. She's very active on her walks though. She runs after the ball and chases the other dogs etc. If it was a thyroid issue would there be any other signs? She had surgery recently for precancerous lumps on her nipples because she wasn't spayed and she had anger panel right before the surgery that was fine. Vet didn't mention any thyroid issue but do they look for that in a Geri panel? She is spayed now. They removed her uterus because it was inflamed but thankfully she didn't have pyometria or however it's spelled. Any thoughts? She was already overweight before her surgery by the way. She always has been kind of fat since she was an adult.
Certainly sounds like she us well cared for.
Due to her age, it could, like the rest of us, be a metabolism issue and it could be thyroid. You would have to ask your Vet if he ran a T3, T4.
For years, many if us (meaning myself and dig show friends) have used the green bean diet to get some weight off. You can use canned (low sodium), frozen or fresh (I usually used canned and rinsed them well). Use half your regular diet then the other half green beans. Never had any problems with this.
