Yeasty Ears

Hi, I have a brussels griffon ( ewok dawg) and he constantly has black tar like stuff coming out of his ear. I have tried many remedies, prescribed, store bought, home made. I have tried apple cider, alcohol and water, poor guy hates it and runs from me as soon as he smells the vinegar. Any ideas out there?

Sad Mommy of Ted.

Even if you are feeding a high quality food your dog could have developed an allergy to the protein source.  You may want to try switching to a different protein and see if it helps. Maybe a less common one like bison or venison.   I had an english bulldog that was pretty much allergic to everything and she had chronic yeasty ears too.  And it did look like what you are describing.

Thanks Karla, once upon a time the vet told me it was yeast. When he give me the drops they were for a minute but the problem always comes back. Ted is on a prescribed diet by the vet for his kidneys. I would NEVER feed my babies that crap from the grocery store. My vet was the one who told me to mix the alcohol with apple cider vin and water ....but truth is Ted hates it.

It doesn't look like coffee grounds, they are like little balls of tar - and they smear - they are sticky and stick to his little ear hairs and I have to cut the hair out to get it out.
I am going to try Wallys because my thought is, even if its mites, and I would be shocked if it was because he is a house dog and his sister doesnt have any problem and they often times sleep together all cuddled up. Any other ideas??? Anyone??? =)

Hello & welcome.....Are you sure it's Yeast? Did your Vet culture the wax to see what your dealing with?

Usually, Black Tar substance is Ear Mites...It Looks like coffee grounds....Is that what your seeing? Your Vet will prescribe drops for mites...It works very well.

If it's Mites, none of these things you've tried will work! Please, don't use alcohol in the ears.....It's too drying and will damage the soft tissue!

If it truely is yeast, normally ear problems go hand in hand with a food allergy....That said, if you are feeding a high grain diet (Grocery store diet), then it's probably the problem....Grains (Carbohydrates) turn to sugar in the system....Yeast feeds off of sugar! If this is the case, a change of diet will be of benefit for him, in general...Also, adding a probiotic for a few months will make a huge difference....

My favorite product for ears: "Zymox" - Used for allergies, Yeast, Bacteria & just plain itching from allergies....They make two different kinds...I prefer the one with cortizone to relieve itching...Also can be used a few times a week as a preventative....Love this stuff!
Can be purchased online....I have bought it from my Holistic Vet & have bought it online from "Entirely Pets".

These are my ideas to help your guy....Good luck and come back with updates....Karla

Try Wallys ear oil. A drop or 2 in each ear a of couple times a week. It is soothing and kills infections. It will also break up ear wax. Add omega 3's to his diet along with a probiotic and a little coconut oil. These two will aid in reducing food allergeries and fungal infections. Good luck!
