You may have heard my puppy died of parvo on June 3rd. I now have a new love...

So I came home to BC for my wedding. Over a month ago my puppy died of parvo and my mother in law to be said she would get us one as a wedding present. I found one from a breeder. She is pure bred yellow lab but doesnt have any papers. She is 3 months old and I took her to the vet today, got her "second" parvo shot (lady didnt have papers form the first so not 100% sure it was done or done right) The vet said she should be fine , we are getting her last parvo shot 3 days before we head home to the parvo populated town. He said she seems healthy, has gotten all her dewormings and will be getting her rabies and heart worm meds when she gets her last parvo. I really trust this guy, our family has dealt with him for years and is wonderful (he is also the vet for the zoo and once owned his own tiger) So Im really happy and hope it will go as planned like he said it should. Now for the training, NO chewing, NO peeing in the house, No crying all night.... am I missing anything ? lol

Just thought Id give an update on my puppy situation. :D

Congratulations! I love yellow labs. They're such sweet, loyal dogs. Yes, you will probably have a time of adjustment with crying and potty training for awhile but if he's already 3 months hopefully it won't take too long.
I think I would probably go ahead and get that extra parvo shot just to be safe. What can it hurt? They give 4 sessions of the shot here each month because it's a high area for parvo. So, I've been having to take the puppies in each month. Yeah, it gets a little expensive but we've only got two more and they will give the rabies that last month and then I won't have to go back again for another year and it will be yearly after that.
Labs are usually pretty big chewers so get him some good chew toys. You might want to either crate train or at least block him off in a part of the house where there's no carpet till he's completely potty trained and isn't going to chew up your furniture. I had a dog trainer tell me you can't really trust them out running around the house till they're at least a year old and even then need to watch them.
I hope this puppy brings you many years of joy and happiness! Congratulations again!

Thanks. I was wanting to get a baby gate to put up for her but I also need to purchase a crate for the flight home. There arent crates safe for planes that will fit her from now till shes done growing so Im not sure what to do. If I shoudl get one now and one when she out grows it or see about renting one from the airline and buying her one when she is bigger. Mind you she probably wont like it when she is older cuz shes not used to it.

That's what I've got. I did daycare for awhile so I have babygates. I put one in the kitchen for the daytime so the puppies can see all of us. They have a bed, toys, food and water there. Then I put up another one in our master bathroom so that they can sleep near us. They've adapted very well to that but it did take about a month of them crying and waking up every couple of hours crying, etc. They are now sleeping through the night but still not completely potty trained. They're 4 months old so I hope it won't be much longer. Some days they're better than others. I noticed when we have to leave for a few hours they will have more accidents. When we're home we let them out every hour and a half to two hours and they do pretty well with that.

If you do crate train you will have to get a bigger crate when she gets bigger. I've heard people swear by them and love it. They say they potty train faster that way. My husband wanted to do it but I didn't. I still waver on that. I know I grew up with dogs and we did pretty good training them before crate training became popular but I just don't remember how my parents did it! They probably had to watch the dogs like hawks!

They're doing pretty well on a leash now too. They didn't like it much when I first started with it! I'm hoping to put them in a puppy class maybe next month. How about you?

Well, if you don't do a puppy class at least make sure to socialize your puppy with other dogs and people to make for a friendlier dog. I'm noticing my puppies act afraid of other dogs when I'm out walking them and I want to get them more used to it. I wish you well!

Oh for sure. I was leery of letting my other pup play with one neighbor dog cuz he wasnt vaccinated at all (he ended up dyeing when my pup did, go figure) But I have another neighbour who has a chocolate lab that Im sure she will get along with. I am goign to take her out lots once im sure she will be safe. I am keeping her with the breeder till I fly home in 3 weeks but I picked her up to take her to the vet the other day, adn she was really nervous in the car and nervous at the vet. She was a little uncomfortable with the leash but she was already getting better by the end of the vet experience. How do you think I should make her used to the car and without scaring her. Should I hold her, keep her by her self in the back seat? And what about the vet? My other pup never had a problem. I had a god growing up for 14 years who was such a great dog but needed to be muzzled at eh vet. She never acted this way at any other time but at the vet. We did switch vets and she loved him.

Good luck with your new puppy!
Have you spoken with your vet about bringing a new puppy into the house?
Our vet recommends waiting 1 year after having a dog with parvo before bringing in a new puppy.  The parvo virus can live for a very long time in your house and yard.

I know parvo lives for so long. Our vet said her vaccines will be covered by the time she is in the area. So as long as she has them all on time after that she should be fine.
