We had a Sheltie that barked at EVERYTHING, the telephone, the noise from cleaning mirrors, people coming to the house, and again when leaving, when you had food she liked and didn't share, when you shouted at someone, I could go on and on. We never could stop her, tried everything from ignoring her to throwing a can of pennies on the floor when she barked. I hope someone else has some good advice for you, but I will say that try not to let the barking bother you too much, cause when your dog is gone its too quiet.
I'm not really the best person to ask about this. I have a dog who likes to bark occasionally at passers-by, bikes etc, but she doesn't do a lot of it. If I want her to stop, I just go out to where she's sounding off and go "Hey! Shut it now" in a pack leader kind of voice, (I do not shout, scream or raise my voice, but just say it firmly, sharply, and get her full attention when I say it) -and remarkably she actually listens and shuts up!
I know it depends on the dog....it depends on how obsessed they have got with barking, and it depends on whether they will stop what they are doing at that very moment to listen to you.
I think a good idea would be to try it, and when there is peace and quiet, THEN give your dog a reward. Whether that's a tiny food treat, or affection.....
