breathless

i have a 2yr old weimeraner she is very active and loves nothing more than running through the fields, she is very highly strung too almost human!!! for the last few months she has been like gasping for breath not just after exercise sometimes jus when shes chilling out, she was spayed 8 months ago and had her heart checked etc. im really worried but my friend who has a beagle says it is normal so i dont want to look silly going to the vets and spending a lot of money if i dont need to (dont get me wrong money isnt the issue here i would do anything for her) i was just wondering if anyone elses dog does a similar thing??? somedays she doesn do it at all other days once or twice and i notice it more at night

my little bichon frise has also done that, esp. at night. my vet said that dogs do what is called a reverse sneeze. i know that sounds crazy. i didn't believe him at first, but i've heard others say the same thing. when mine does that, i just very calmly and gently, very gently rub his throat and talk softly to him and petting him ever so gently. it helps. i'm not saying this is your problem, but could be, since it  is so common. but it could be worth at least a phone call to your vet since you never know, it could be a lung problem. i would ask friends who has dogs if their's does it the same way.i do agree with peekawho.
my vet said my stroking his throat GENTLY and slowly

and speaking softly to him was the right thing to do.[for him]

If its worrying you, then its worth getting her looked at by the vet.  They can do some simple tests to see if her heart is ok, or determine if it is something similar to asthma that can occur in dogs.

But she definately should be examined by a vet to be sure what's going on.  If she was simply spayed 8 months ago, they wouldn't have done any special tests on her heart beyond listening to it.  And that was 8 months ago, and things could have changed.
