cotrimoxazole could induce urinary retention?

My dog is a 8 years old dachshund.  He has a chronic R ear infection. For the past 6 weeks he was put on Phenobarb for seizures and for the past 4 days  on Bactrim 250mg per day. Could Bactrim induce urinate retention ?
The dog got agitated, salivating and can not urinate?!

Hello & welcome.....What your describing is "Toxicity" to the drug......Not just a reaction, but a serious toxic effect.....
Bactrim is a Sulfa Drug....It's my understanding that they (These drugs)can create crystals to form in the urine which can lead to blockage......
Your dog is in trouble and you need to call the Vet immediately!! They need to flush these crystals from his penis to clear the blockage.....

My sister almost lost her dog to a reaction to another Antibiotic, but also a Sulfa one....Her dog started having seizures, couldn't walk, etc. in a matter of a few days on the drug...The Vet said she had not seen this kind of reaction, but once they stopped the drug, her Bichon slowly started to get better.....

I wish I had seen your post earlier, I hope you have already got him to the Vet.....Please, come back and let me know about him...I can help you with the ear problems when you get him better.....

If you have not already, STOP the Antibiotic & get to your Vet......I'll be worried about him, so let me know.....Karla
