crate training

crate training

I recently adopted a 3yr old dog that had belonged to a homeless man who passed away. She is fine as long as she is with me, but if I leave her alone in the house when I got to work - the place is destroyed when I return. To a point that she tore the door trim from the wall trying to get out... I am wondering if crate training would help or even if it is a possibility...

Crates are great for potty training and anxiety outbursts. Try the crate slowly since this dog probably never had a locked shelter. Make sure there is enough room for the dog to stand up and turn around to change positions.   Put a comfortable towel or whatever is comforting to the dog inside the crate.Rub it on your skin to pick up your scent for his emotional comfort. Throw in a treat or toy and let him explore it on his own terms for a few days.  Then when you think he is more comfortable put him in for a short period of time. Disappear for a while 10 mins. or so. Then come back and take him for a walk and play with him.  Do this several times before you actually have to leave him in there for a full work day. You might even play a radio while your gone, talk radio or relaxing type music playing softly. The crate will protect him from harm, protect your home and belongings and teach him to hold his urine and BM's. He may be depressed because of his loss and his misbehaving is probably due to seperation anxiety.  If he is not doing better in a few weeks time you may have to resort to meds for his mental and emotional well being. Has he been to the vet for a full work-up? All physical possibillities should be eliminated before you just blame his behavior on a mental cause. He should get all his shots too because his former owner probably didn't have the means to provide all that. Give him extra attention and be patient with him. If you have ever had a major loss to death you know how he is feeling.  Good Luck & I hope all turns out well for you and your new friend.
