dog in pain but can't identify why

We noticed 2 days ago that when we try to pick up my 6 year old Chihuahua he yelps in pain & he doesn't jump up on the couches or the bed because its too painful for him. When we touch his stomach & back area he'll whimper, whine, yelp, or move away. We can't identify the area that hurts because he'll yelp at different areas being touched & it differs everytime. His energy has decreased, lays around all day, & simply seems sad. He also went more then 24 hours w/o pooping, but pooped a little yesterday, but not close to what he usually does and hasn't pooped today. He isn't limping, bruised, bleeding or cuts. I am really worried about him. I want to take him to the vet but I feel like they will only want to take x-rays to spend money and will tell me they don't know what it is (happened to me before). Please help!!

My chihuahua just started this same thing, best advice I can give is before you take him/her to the vets try giving canned pumpkin along with canned dog food instead of hard dog food. Make sure the canned pumpkin is pure 100% pumpkin. This will help with the constipation, if after a day or two your dog still hasn't gone potty and is still in pain, take him/her to the vets. I hope the best for all your little ones!

My 9 year old Chihuahua has been experiencing these problems for less than 24 hours. When ever I put too much pressure on him he yelps, cries, and growls. My family doesn't have money for surgery, medicine, or any special medical treatment. If anyone knows what I can do at home, ensuring the safety of my dog, please tell me.

Hi. I have a 7 y/o chihuahua. He has been experiencing increasing pain all over for the past 24 hrs. Now that the vet is open I have tried to take him, but he screams in pain when touched at all. He bit when I tried so we are waiting to take him. Now will only lay around, weak when walking, won't eat or drink except out of my hand. I'm at a loss. Any suggestions?

Someone please give us an answer.. My 4 year old chihuahua just started this, the same exact thing.. I don't have money to take him to the vets. They'll charge hundreds of dollars just to do tests to see what's wrong. Does anyone know what happened with this dog?

It might be a herniated disk. That is when the soft tissue which 'cushions' the disk starts to ooze out at the sides of the bone. This can be painful, and can put pressure on the spinal cord.
There is a solution, and the best one is surgery. But it will not be cheap. He needs to see the vet and may need an MRI.
While you're waiting to see a vet, don't let him even TRY to jump up onto anything, leap into a car, or climb stairs. Lift him very carefully supporting his body by placing an arm round his chest area, and one around his back end and tail area, keeping his body straight. Gentle walks to poop/pee are okay but no more. If he has a crate, he's better in there and not moving much. or otherwise very sedentary.

When your dog is in pain the first thing you need to do is determine why they are in pain. If you aren’t sure why your dog is hurting it is always a good idea to bring them to the vet and have them examined. The reason for this is that if you simply give medication for pain without knowing what you are treating, you could be masking the symptoms of something that needs immediate medical attention.

dog in pain l dog put down l dog put to sleep

Haven't taken him to the Vet yet but I am going to soon. Thanks for your feedback. I don't have the best faith in his vet so I am looking up a better one. I'll update once there is something to report. Thanks again!

I'd say It's IVDD......What did your Vet think? It can be diagnosed (By a good Vet) by symptoms alone......More often than not, it doesn't show up on an Xray......A MRI is needed to be sure, but standard treatment is normally started either way......It can be reversed if done correctly and soon......Thanks for the update, Karla

Hey, so to update he's doing a lot better. He is no longer complaining/yelping in pain thankfully. And he is going to the bathroom regularly. I think they were linked, at least partially. But he still will not jump up on the couch or bed like he used to. He climbed the stairs but slowly and no longer "hops" up them like he used to. So in short he's a lot better but not completely. I fear it might be his back or joints. He's a 6 year old 12 pound, long bodied Chihuahua.

ANy update? Just curious as to what you found out.......Thanks, Karla

If this turns out to be constipation, giving canned pumpkin with every meal will solve the problem.....That along with Wet foods & NOT only a dry diet....Let us know...

Hey all, thanks for your comments and the links. It may be something with his back but he isn't limping and doesn't move gingerly. I can touch his back without him yelping. He yelps at random spots on his sides or stomach. He didn't use the bathroom (poop) yesterday, but the day before he did a little bit, but on Tuesday he didn't at all. He is eating just not as much as he usually does. There' s no vomiting. I am thinking it may be something he ate and cannot pass? If he doesn't improve today, I will take him to the vet and see what he or she says. Unfortunately I do not have a very good and reliable "Companion Animal" vet. All the vets that I know of around me are expensive. =/ Any other ideas?

Agree with Ginger.  Understand where you are coming from but often diagnostics are needed.
Is he eating? You say he isn't defacating much.  Is he constipated?

This is probably either a disk in the spine, or abdominal problem. The only way to fix this by the sound of it would be to get Xrays done. There may also be other tests needed such as bloodwork, urinalysis, etc. Sometimes Xrays alone don't show up problems sufficently, so MRI scans are needed. That would be the normal procedure for diagnosing whatever might be wrong with these kinds of symptoms.
But you need to go to a vet you feel you can trust. Do you know anyone in your area who can recommend a very good and reliable "Companion Animal" vet?
