One of the best things you can do is get to know your neighbors who have dogs.  Personal recommendations go a long way with me.  If your needs are immediate, try surfing the internet for vets in your area.  There are quite a few sites that offer personal reviews for vet clinics.

Most vet specialists are referral only, which means you'll need a clinic vet first to provide the referral to the opthamologist.
