Adams makes a flea and tick spray that can be used on puppies and kittens as young as four weeks.  It is sold in most well stocked pet stores, I've never seen it in a grocery store.  

If you can't find Adams, I would do as Margot suggested and use Dawn dish liquid and then after the puppy is dry, rub him down with Avon Skin So Soft.  He'll be pretty greasy feeling and looking for a while, but it's better than being infested with fleas.  Fleas can take down a young puppy or kitten in a VERY short period of time so it is necessary to keep him as flea free as possible until he's old enough to use an honest-to-goodness flea treatment on him.

The only way you are going to keep fleas out after you treat your animals is to completely treat your house and yard.  It's NOT easy and it takes a lot of effort and sometimes a considerable amount of money to do, but it is absolutely necessary for the safety and well being of your animals and even the humans in the home.  Fleas don't care who they bite to get their blood meal and if they are in your home and yard they are just as likely to prey on you as your dog.

Please, however, whatever products you purchase to control them, check with your vet first to make sure they come with his recommendation.  DO NOT purchase any over the counter, grocery store brands like Hartz Mountain, Zodiac or Sargent's.  These are simply NOT SAFE and have killed and sickened MANY animals in the last few years. These companies have all been ordered by the FDA to remove most of their products from the shelves in recent years and the products that have been allowed to remain are still causing way too many adverse reactions and will, in all likelihood, be pulled in the fairly near future.  Stick with the products that your vet has available for sale in his office or that he recommends you go get from a pet store or farm store.

We don't know how old this pup is.  I' not familiar with that medication, no time to look it up now, but I would not be giving a young pup a prescription medication.
Good advice though to consult with a Vet.

BTW... CAPSTAR is safe for dogs of all ages.

Your vet will give you the correct sized dose.

Go to your vet, and get CAPSTAR.

It's a pill, and once administered, it'll kill every flea on the animals body within 10-20 minutes.

For maintenance, there are a lot of flea preventative's out there. My favorite, and the one I use for all my animals, is TRIFEXIS. Takes care of fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites & worms in one pill.

CAPSTAR is your friend... go to your vet and ask. It's only $10-$12, so pretty reasonable if you ask me.

Be sure and bomb/treat your house, as you don't want reoccurance.

Hi Bob,
How old is this puppy?  You have the mom and/or litter or just the one puppy?
Flea products can be harmful to young puppies and the fleas can be harmful too!!!
You can try giving the puppy a bath with Dawn dish soap or Avon Skin So Soft in warm water.  If the puppy will tolerate it, try to keep it in the water for 5-10 mins. Don't get water in the ears.  You can wet the head with your hand.  Rinse well and then comb the puppy with a flea comb. Of course, you need to treat the areas where the puppy is.  Wash any bedding in hot water. Vacuum the house and get rid of the bag outside in the trash.  When I had a vacuum with a bag, I would keep flea collars on hand, cut them and keep them inside the vacuum bag.  
If not sure about all this, give your Vet a call and see what you can safely use on the puppy but, again, you have to treat the environment and any other animals that may be in your home.
