grade 6 heart murmur

grade 6 heart murmur

I just bought a puppy from a breeder that didn't do very good at health check. When i took my puppy to the vet for check up and 3rd vaccination, she said that my 10 weeks puppy is having a grade 6 heart murmur. My vet said to take him to a UC Davis to see cardiologist. But it cost so much already for the x-rays and i dont know how much more it will cost for treatment. Does anybody have any idea for the cost? i'm thinking about returning the puppy to the breeder but i already fell in love with him.

I have an 8 week old puppy that was diagnosed with a grade 1 heart murmur at 7 weeks. My initial vet did not give me a grade for the murmur and basically told me my pup was no good and had no hope. I found a new vet.

At the time, the first vet estimated the cost of visiting a cardiologist would be between $200 and $300.  I am in Australia.

I am sure if you called around to some animal cardiologists in your area they could give you an estimate.

Good luck.  I hope all goes well.

Occasionally the vet school at university of minnesota will adjust costs on a case by case basis, but you need to ask if they will do a sliding scale fee taking into account your individual financial situation. It is after all a teaching facility and their main goal is to train doctors. If your dog has a condition the students can benefit from learning about, they may work with you. Don't delay in seeking some kind of help, from what I understand anything past grade 4 is dire. Good luck to you all.

I'm sorry about this one.........Another heart broken because of bad breeding.  I would not return the puppy. However, I would call the breeder and report this as He/She should not be breeding these adults. This is probably a congential defect. The ones that suffer are the puppies and their new owners who (As you put it) have fallen in love.....The breeder will dispose of your puppy. Possibly in a way that you do not want to hear about. This puppy may have a short life, but at least it was with someone that loved it! Heart meds are not very expensive...I had an EKG on a furkid, and it was $150.00. His meds. are very affordable... That's all I know about the expense. I wish you both well.....Karla
