is my pup in pup

I have a 10 month old jack russel pup who came on season about 3 or 4 weeks ago. There are no other dogs around here but her nipples are swollen as well as her ' area ' and she very timid. How do you tell if she going to have puppys?

If you can get a urine sample it can be done quite early to test if she is in pup.But as ginger said it is quite feasible for her to have a false pregnancy.
Because it is winter still ....her heat could go on a bit longer and if that happens they don't often get in pup and it would just about be her first heat wouldent it?

Please let us know what the vet says ! if positive lets hope a couple of the pups don't come out  yellow. lol

Well I don't know about those Dingoes and how friendly they would be with a girl on heat? Possibly, yes. Especially if your girl gets out when you can't keep an eye on her, or out in your yard?
But 10kilometers isn't that far for a male dog to come courting! Males have been known to run to exhaustion to catch a female on heat. And scent can be carried by all kinds of things. The postman's vehicle, delivery trucks, the wind even....

Heat cycle usually lasts no more than 3 weeks. A swollen vulva is more noticeable in the last 2 weeks far as I've noticed. So if it's a few weeks since she came out of heat, then she's either pregnant or has what's called "False Pregnancy" (which is the hormones a bit out of whack) False Pregnancy in itself usually goes away by itself, and isn't anything to worry about, but it can cause mood changes, and even appetite changes sometimes.
Pregnancy at her age will need careful management. I would get her checked by the vet to see if there are any procedures at this early stage to tell if she is pregnant or not. I'm not sure. It might be you'll have to wait a few weeks for that to be determined.

Ah another Aussie should have known  !10 k's to nearest house lol.  Hope it wasn't a Dingo .
So glad you got back in touch as things are clearer now.
Other than the Dingo theory cant see how it could have happened.Could be a phantom pregnancy I suppose....... but at her age she should not know about things like that .lol. the plot thickens.
Thanks for replying ......you know we will want to know the outcome to this mystery.!!!!!

thanks seeana. it is very destressing as she is a purebreed and we intend to breed her later in life but this was just sprung on us. We did lock her up where no dog could get to her but im starting to think somehow one did. We live 10 klms to the nearest house and id say the closest dog is colse to 30 ks so i dont know...
Im hoping shes not but if she is i would find them good homes. Im an animal lover and could not do anything to harm them.

i will

If you have let your little girl run free.... dog will appear out of the woodwork. She must always be safely put where no dogs can get to her.10 months she is only a puppy herself this is not good for her.
The only way you can tell for certain is an ultrasound done at the vets. She could also still be in season as sometimes it can go on for weeks being she is swollen around her vulva.
I think a trip to the vets is in order just to make sure everything is ok.

If you are not set up to be a breeder it might be a good idea to get her spayed as you will get this problem every 6 months and having puppies who are not purebreed could be a big problem finding really good homes for them as you will have no idea what they will turn out like, also if by chance a bigger dog has got to her she would be in big trouble giving birth to them and its quite dangerous as you could lose her.

Please let us know the outcome
